Why does everyone out there like VW's what is it about it's quirky style that makes you all go mmmmmmm ???????

and to break it down further, why do the beetle people like beetles ? the Kombi people like Kombi's, the Type 3 people like Type 3's etc etc ........

I got into VW's because my dad hates them ..... I was a rebelious 16 year old ...... have to say now, dad loves my new cabrio !

I like 'em all, but I like the New Beetles best. If only VW made good quality cars, I'd be driving around in a cabrio myself now, assuming VW Australia brought in the turbo version.

i got my superbug because i am poor. i needed a car that could get from A to B (occasionaly C... i get lost easy) on low mileage with low maintenance. thus far Kikko has done more than i hoped for the money i paid. recently i gave the engine a fairly good run over, and i love it even more than ever.

The beetle visually suited my style; old school charisma coupled with humour and sex appeal ( i resemble a beetle). as well as provided the basics i needed at the time. as soon as the hsc is over and the money flows in gradually she will be built into an absolute stunner.

cheers, what a brilliant question, wonder why it didnt come up earlier

my dad had a few kombies over the years, we had a '76 bay as the family car for a year or two, i guess i was around 15ish....
i just wanted a camper of my own after that.
got a '73 bay when i was 18.
got a '70 beetle when i was 20 (camper was still having rust repairs at this point)
now i've got a '67 squareback....

i reckon one thing leads to another....

kai😎

p.s. also had a couple of watercooled's, which while fun, i found to be terribly un-reliable, and they both leaked a lot!!!!

It's a disease I tell you.
Once upon a time, long ago, single and care free I only ever owned push bikes and motor bikes. Fun was to be had in every journey, not a care in the world.

Then it hit. I was struck by the bug. The bug festered within me for a number of years before finally it unleashed its fury. I was no longer satisfied. My once dust covered and moth eaten wallet suddenly saw light of day, and sense less spending ensued.

Luckily for me the bug soon began to fade, or so I thought. It mutated into another more dangerous form, the kombi came to the fore and took over. Kombi's appeared everywhere, and the uncontrollable urge welled up inside of me, I had to have them. I was hit hard I tell you. Like rabbits multiply my yard began to fill up.
Such was the grip of the disease that my yard alone was no longer enough. Soon family members just became available storage space. I am glad to say the Kombi within me has begun plateau as my poor weather-beaten and emptied wallet makes a hasty retreat.

But now, as I begin to feel comfortable in the calm, this relentless disease begins to mutate again in the form called the type 3. I shudder to think where it will take me. There is no hiding I tell you.
Once this disease has its grip on you, it has you for life. All other things fade into the back ground as it takes control of you.

And even now, as I pray for light at the end of the tunnel, horrible people, who are gripped worse than me by the disease, try to tempt me with even more variations on the disease with even weirder names like the type 4, the baja, the buggy and the trike. Where will it all end AAARRRGGGHHHH.....

I beg you all run while you still can, before the bug bites!!!

Wait….. Noooo….. they are coming for me, HEELPPPP, some one save me PLEASEEEEEEE……

Not the jacket again, I promise to be good, I promise!!!

I could reinterate all that has been said before me except the fact that I grew up with them. Apart from my first cinema experience being "Herbie goes Bananas" in Bundaberg about 21 years ago I had never grown up with this quirky make. I guess - and it is only a guess it mostly lies in the fact stated in somebodies signature here.

"You laugh at me because I drive something so different,
I laugh at you because you all drive somthing the same".

...or somthing like that anyhow. It getting late 🙁

I had a friend (yes just one and it was a long time ago too) and she (yes she was female - I checked) anyhow, can I get on with it... anyhow she was looking for a kombi. Being a bloke I was to know everything about kombis. Well after roving all over Qld for about 5 months I was getting pretty good at finding crap ones. I was amazed at how simple they were though. The other amazing thing was 'why wasn't mainstream vehicles so much like the VW concept - they are so simple'. I laugh when a mechanic refuses to work on a VW. Says a lot for them eh!

The model depends on the person - people who want sex drive sexy cars like cab's, KG and speedsters (well I think there sexy). People who want to collect firewood drive kombis - or have 7 kids - or love to camp - or, well you get the idea.

I love my baja because (A) it cheap (See above a to B sometimes c) (B) the worse it gets the more character it has, (C) I can safely fit the family, enough kit for a night or two and climb mad hills, dunes and ranges.

Good question

I might upset a few people, but you did ask.
I dont like beetles for me they are not practical, wife and 2 year old, if I had one, it would be a pain trying to get my daughter in the back in a baby seat, and then where do you put the pram?.
I have had beetles in the UK but as I am now they are no good for me.

I only like splits, its the looks that do it for me, they are classic and have style, and also I can justify having one by telling the wife we can use it for camping when it is finished.

Cheers

You can project a personality onto a Beetle or a Kombi, or a notch etc... They LOOK like they have a personality and that makes them easier to fall "in love" with.

Wife in the passenger side, or under the bonnet if she's a whiner, put the two year old on the floor passenger side (Plenty of room to play) and the pram on the roof rack. Heaps of room! Now you can even get a dog to fill the back seat or simply go camping in your new Baja!

Plenty of room - No Worries!

OMG what a Pic Bronze!! :o LOL!!!!

I think ours started when we were given my grandparents old Kombi, beginning a year long *everyspareminuteoftheday* Resto (you've all been there). Then we decided I'd rather like a beetle, I like smaller cars and I was convinced that's what I wanted.
To cut a long story short I answered an Ad in the paper and got a look at Belle, Ain't love at first sight grand??
I don't know why we like what we like, I personally really dislike driving the Kombi but I adore my beetle.

They're different, they have personality and certainly turn heads 😉

My passion basicly started with Herbie and growing up in Clifton Beach Tassie. Living close to the beach and being constantly surrounded by Kombies, T3 and Beetles tends to rub off.

The funny thing was my father was a Harley and V8 nut, who hated VW's. It was a proud day when I bought by fist 64 beetle.lol.He hated it and his mates at the Henchman club house really gave him a hard time. All was forgiven when I bought my first Harley.

I would have to say I'm addicted and my wife would back that up 100%.

I don't know how they live with us.lol.

It first started when i was looking for my first car.. i told my best friend how much i wanted a kombi but she eventually talked me out of it.. and i ended up buying a barina 😠

I still had a love for old cars and really wanted one.. I told my parents about this idea and they said 'you have a perfectly reliable car as it is, and whos going to pay when it breaks down' but i still kept looking and test drived an 61 ek holden but it was alittle hard to handle.

Finally i thought enough was enough and i had to have a kombi !!! So i went in search without the support of my parent. I eventually got dad to have a look at one and from then on he has loved the idea of me having a vw.

I have only had my kombi for about 3 months but i definately have the vw bug and i dont think il ever be able to drive another car again!!!!

the better question is why not?
they are easy to work on to a point, have their own personality, stand out in the crowd and have other like minded drivers to the point where they have become a cult thing and are still the highest selling production car.

I stumbled across this website one day after finding an old Hot VW mag I had bought when I was 17 which had rekindeled the desire to own a volksy. After 2 weeks I was the proud owner of a little tatty but solid Type 3 squareback. Not much has changed but I love driving it and hangen out here.

I like all VWs, had bugs, a buggy and a kombi, but i could easily own any aircooled model and a few of the water cooled ones as well.

ENGINEERING
first production car with; 4 wheen independant suspension.
a compact rear mount drive train.
semi-unitary body/chassis design.
easy to maintain
set new standards for fuel efficiency and design levels

STYLING
classic lines
retro before retro was around
easily hotrodded with abit of dumping

DRIVING
nimble
competitive in most forms of motorsport when set up properly
an absolute hoot to cruise in.

OTHER
a good reason to play punch buggy.
beetles make little kids smile and wave.
you can pretend it's an early porsche.
cheap.
loads and loads of character and every one is different.
They literally changed the face of motoring in every way.
