OK - I've got a dilema so I'm going to put this out there and hope you guys/girls will give me your opinion (which is much appreciated and needed) - bear with me......

I have a 1970 1500 beetle which has a crunched front quarter panel, bonnet and now not straight - but overall was a fantastic car - great engine and (rest of) body in good condition.

When it was smashed up, we decided to buy another body without an engine and put the 1500 engine in it. We bought a superbug (which we didn't realise at the time but won't take many parts from the 1500). So we have dropped the engine into it - but still needs a lot of work incl. paint job & some interior.

Now, we are in the process of buying a beautiful 1971 1300 which requires no work at all. But after driving a 1500 I want to put that engine into this one.

This will leave me with a body of a superbug (ie all parts no engine), a crunched and crooked body of a 1500 (but I love this one) and the engine of a 1300.

So my question is - what would you guys do with these - sell off, restore, get a bigger engine?? All ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks - CB Hotdog

weld the frame head from the 71 standard bug onto the 1500 and get the front qtr (i dont know if they are the same but if they are get the qtr side off the 1300 and put it on the 1500 otherwise pay for a clip and fix up the 1500. then put the 1300 front end on the 1500, sell the superbug minus engine and sell the 1300 bug inpeices (the ones u didnt use) like glass etc and try to break even.

Thanks - appreciate the advice - but if we buy the 1300 I'm not pulling it apart - am payiing top dollar as it's in beautiful original condition - the only thing I would do is put the 1500 engine in it.

That is why I only have left to play with : a 1300 engine, body of a 70 superbug, and body of a crunched and crooked 1500....

keep the 1300 and just enjoy driving it keep it original and you'll get you money back, and then some, some day when and if you sell it.

If funds allow keep the 1500 and get it fixed as a longer term project.

Get rid of the super to help finance other projects.

at the end of the day it comes down to finances and room.

That sounds like a good plan ...... when you say keep the 1300 original, are you suggesting not to swap the engines - would this affect the value?? I had considered this, but I much prefer my vw's a bit zippier (anyway no biggie).

But good idea to get rid of the superbug I think and just work back on my origianl one. Would the pans be compatible from the superbug 70 to the standard 70??

depends how bad the 1500 has been banged up.
is it repairable. My guess the 1300 is earlyish so is probably worth more standard especially if you paid a good price for it.
Save the zip for the 1500...you could even go bigger

Yeh - 1971 1300.

I am definitely keeping the 1300 as is (apart from possibly swapping the engines). And sounds like a good idea to rebuild the original smashed up one. Someone suggested to just get a new pan and put the body onto it - is that a good option. If so, would the pan from my 70 superbug match the standard 1500 body??

Where is the frame head - is that in the pan or part of the body (I'm new to the tech side so please forgive me)

he means lay it that low that you crape every where. and by installing a 1916cc mottor, you will scrape with speed and style. :thumb

if you swap the 1500, still keep the 1300 as it belongs with the car. if its that good. then this would be wise. as for the other stuff, if you can keep it you will never know when something else comes along that you can use it on. ie maybe you will find a 1500 with a smacked up rear. then you will have a project. but if the other half dont like bits of cars everywhere. sell it. or trade her. :P

Put the 1500 into the 1300 and if it does not have disks on the front of the 1300 already take the 1500 stubs and disks if they are not damaged and they should go straight onto the 1300. If you are upgrading power you should make sure it is going to stop first.

Could always upgrade the 1300 with 1600 barrels & pistons, then you'll keep the serial no's right and still have a bit of power. sell the super to pay for the work on the 1500 and you should end up with 2 nippy bugs

Excuse my ignorance - but what do you mean by "keeping the serial no's right" by replacing with a 1600 barrells & pistons??

Is this the engine and extras?? How much would i be looking at for one??

Went to look at my damaged 1500 and starting to feel confident that it can be rebuilt (she will live!!) - so like your thinking but just need some more info on what you mean.....

1300 motors are one of the best motors vw built.
I would just leave it as it is and enjoy it.
Save time money and headache.
Just keep the 1500 in the shed if you ever need it one day but hopfully not.

Well I think we have almost decided that the 1500 won't be going in it (hopefully going to rebuild my 1970 1500 so the engine will go back in her). But what do you reckon about giving it 1600 barrell & pistons ( I really sound like I know what I'm talking about don't I?? Don't be fooled).

Do you think don't do anything?? It's just that after driving a 1500 you really notice the difference in the 1300.. But it's not a huge problem - she's just for getting to work and back...(and the pleasure of owning it of course)
