Hey peoples,

Can anyone tell me how to remove the drivers seat from my 68 type 3. I know it's probably a stupid question, but I've only recently got the car and I've done a few things needed for the RWC, but I've looked and cant see how the seat can be removed. The seat mount is broken and I have a replacement, but cannot for the life of me see how to take the bloody thing out.

Apart from the broken seat mount everything else has been done and is raring to go! So I'm dead keen to sort out this problem and get things happening.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

Sheesh..what a quick reply!

I dont know..I tried that..thought it looked like how that was done, but it seemed stuck. I might try again with a bit more force and some WD40 on the runners for encouragement.

Thanks for replying so quick and I'll give it another go right now.

If this isnt the right way and anyone knows please let me know.

Thanks,

Steve

if its the same as a bug there is a catch on the right hand side that needs to be pushed down to release the seat

Thanks Barls...but that didnt seem to work. Probably because the mount is broken. The seat slides forward on the runners and hits the end, but wont come of the runners. Bloody thing is starting to piss me off!

check the front ends of the runners.. if the seats havnt been removed before.. there are probably the plastic stoppers in the way still 🙂 if theyre there.. you can flick them out with a screw driver

Dammit..took the plastic end caps off and the damn seat still wont come off. Think I'm gonna have to take it to a VW place to sort out. One of the runners is broken anyway so they could fix this.

Another dumb arse question. Are the runners welded to the floorpan, or are they a bolt in job. They seem to slot in between the main body and floor pan, so I'm guessing they bolt in. I honestly cant see in there properly, and need to know if welding will be required or just another bolt-in runner.

Damn my feeble brain. I cant seem to solve the simplest of problems, but the more complicated things seem not to trouble me.

im aftraid i cant tell you if theyre bolted or welded..

BUT!!!.. pull the lever on the front/right up till it jams up..

then hop into the back of the car (behind the seat in question) and kick the base of the seat (not the back rest part) and it should come off pretty nicely🙂

worked for me when i had carpet underlay clogging my runners🙂

%&*@#!

Thanks Damien and everyone else for their suggestions.

Tried getting behind the seat, lifting the lever and kicking and it's still not coming off. It's definitely catching on something metallic, and I cant see what it is. Maybe it's something specific with Type 3's. As I'm a newby with VW's I guess I better be patient and learn as I go. But removing the seat shouldnt be this hard! UUUUUUGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH

the catch on the right side of the seat needs to be pushed down with a screwdriver and it should slide off. the catch looks like a metal prong from a fork nut about 5mm wide

Hey Barls,

The right side runner has basically broken off now, but it's still catching on the left. I cannot see the catch you mentioned. It must be frustrating hearing someone like me not be able to comprehend something so simple..believe me..I'm frustrated too. I appreciate your explaination..I just cant seem to see what you mentioned. I will take a break from trying to fihure it out, and go down to the local VW joint tomorrow and see if they can help out.

But Barls, do you know if the seat runners are a bolt-in affair, or are they weld in.

Cheers,

Steve

Bugger..though as much but couldn't really see for myself.

Thanks for your replies...if in doubt pay someone to look at it for you! That's my half-arsed motto but I sometimes resort to it to get me out of trouble. Probably explains why I'm always flat broke.

The anti slide forward tab is on the inside runner on both seats has to be depressed with a screwdriver and get some to hold up the square tabe on the outside of the seat .... sit yr self on the back seat and push forward with yr feet.

New plastic runner are available on Ebay.com i bought 2 sets of a guy in the US for about $40 aussie.... these stop the seat rattling around on the runner and make it slide and adjust easier
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

Make sure the carpet is out of the way. When I first removed my seats I spent ages belting the S#!t out of it. Once I had it out I discovered that I'd ripped my carpet and this was the only thing holding it in. Also make sure that you pull the lever on the right hand side all the way up until the seat is as far forward as it will go. I found that the best way is to sit in the back seat, pull the lever with your right hand, push the locking tab down with a screw driver in your left hand while pushing the seat forward with your body. Try and keep it as straight as possible or it will tilt and jam up.

The runners in late type 3's are defintely welded to the floor pan, not sure about the early ones though.
