OK so temp has broken the 30 degree mark. The fishtank water temp is rising even though the heater is off. And I have just heard my CPU fan turn off and on a few times. I've never heard it before. (I guess its not off and on but fast slow) The fact that it goes away after a short period probably means I have nothing to worry about, but how can I check on it Win2K apart from shutting down and going into BIOS. Paranoia has set in.... do I have to download? I've seen links to monitor progs eg http://jamie.typepad.com/ontheverge/2004/01/monitor_your_cp.html

Cool video of CPU's frying. Can I trade my Athlon for Pentium now?

trade your athlon for a pentium? pffft... why do that? you can use the athlon to cook your breakfast if you are so inclined!

i guess the best thing(s) for you to do are...
1)make sure you have a whopping cpu fan... i suggest the thermaltake volcano 9, its got a fan control so you can up the fanspeed when it gets hot.
2)get some arctic silver and slather a bit of that on your cpu before you put on the huge cpu fan. keeps the cpu about 2-3degrees cooler.
3)fans. i cannot stress this enough. you cannot have a cool amd without fans. make sure your hard drive/s have some fans, and that you have at least 2 fans on your case.
4)try and put it somewhere its going to get some breeze.

i made sure i did all these things with my athlon and my summer cpu temps during a big 3ds max render wouldnt go above 70. (45 for the case)

spare a thought for us mac users... my ibook has been getting cpu temps of 70 in this brisbane warmth, just sitting there surfing the web. its easy to fry eggs with apples.

good luck... and if all else fails... get a BIG pedestal fan and set it to blow on the case 😀

I'm thinking of installing a 50,000kW air conditioner and maintain room temperature of 2 degrees above absolute zero. Thats what the uni does and it seems to work 😎 Turn that air con off and the 60 odd pooters warm the room very quick.

I have a AMD XP 2500 running at 3200.....

I use one of these.......

http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/venus/rs/a1838.htm

As well as 4 fans in the case itself......

2 near the bottom drawing cool air in and 2 at the top to take out the warm air...

I run 2 450w power supplies..... 1 for the main system and one for the fans.....

Take a look at thermaltake.....

I mean.... 250 - 500 bucks on a well setup case is worth more than replacing CPU and M/Board......

30 degrees is nothing!
my amd 1600xp used to run at 52 degrees all the time until i installed a copper heatsink.
thermaltake silent boost. pretty quiet and now only 36 degrees!

30 degrees = room temp, not CPU.

I've fixed problem although I would like to be able to check the temp, for interests sake. I've got the lounge room aircon on frigid and blowing the cool air up the hall with a fan.

well its been a while since i was doing overclocking and iam sure things have changed, (I think it was back in high school , the celeron 350 coujld be clocked to 500? or was it 600?) anyway, download one of the monitoring programs and also get the biggest, meanest heat sink you can with lots of fans. the oterh big thing was have a cool air source and have your case set up for flow through. I used to have 2x 10cm fans in the side of the case blowing air directly onto the cpu area, and then have about 5 x4 or 5 cm fans on each end of the case sucking air out(these also drew air away from video card, hard drive etc). also tyr in the front nad out the back (may need to cut some holes to do it properly)

There's a program called PC Cool, you can download from Kazaa. I've used it in the past on an old box with cooling issues. It's only a temp fix but it does the job.

I basicly reguaktes the temp to you specs and gives warning to excessive heat as it occurs.

You could have a virus which is causing your disk to perform more read / writes, and therefore causing the fan to come on more often. Or another possibility is to check your line connection speed. Sometimes Telstra have problems in the heat - and you might therefore connect at a lower line speed. When you connect at a lower speed, your CPU can also work harder - therefore more heat.

Just a couple of thoughts.

Bla, I've got an old mac and it's never made it above 40 degrees. Fans shmans. Go the G4! Surely there's no worry at all if it's not heavily modified. I mean, I know there are some crappy PC's out there, but it can't be that bad can it? (Hehe, ya can tell I'm used to quality (macs)!):blah:blah:duh

But yeah, it's important that the fans that suck air OUT of the case are working, not just the ones that distribute the air around inside the case.

i bought all the cooling for my old machine from these guys. their prices are good and their service was 1000x better than their competitors (im talking about a very cheap computer store in springwood... prices rock but the ppl working there are absolute knobs and arent above making you feel stupid for believing information you got from them)

give them a go.

i have a Spire falcon rock 2 cooler with an 80mm fan on my athlon. this is hooked up to my rheobus noise isolator fan speed controller with my flow through system of 2 low 80mm LED front fans to suck in cold air. this blows through past my CPU heatsink fan and is routed out through a rear 80mm LED fan. i also have my HDD mounted in a removable caddy with a small fan blowing air over the top of it. I can also see my CPU fan through the blue glow in my case (i modded in a custom window [yes i did it its not a pre mod]) so i know if it decides to die.

right now with all my fans turned down my CPU temp is 39 degrees.

with my fans turned up underload my CPU rarely goes over 30.

I dont like to buy Thermal Take stuff for the same reason i dont like to buy Intel or Microsoft stuff.........I go for the underdog. and my spire cooler works better than any volcano cooler ive seen on any mates systems.

i got an athlon 64...it rarely gets over 40 degrees. Sometimes the fan even turns off..i got no other fans in the case, i disconnected them when i realised that there was no need. I used to have a tbird 1.4...hottest chip ever. Now that averaged around 60 with fans everywhere.

They should make air conditioners the size of a case fan and mount them in the case....🙂

One of my mates got very serious about pc cooling. got a box sealed over the heatsink with a in and out connetion for 3mm pipe. then ran rubber pipe into the heatsink then to a bar fridge where is coiled around, before going to a pump and back to the cpu, so basically the water was coold in the fridge for about 5mins worht of pipe, then ran over the cpu. very risky as a little leak would be bad news for a motherboard.

I bought my PC from them a couple of years ago and saved big $$$ but the service isnt! Its funny how some shops (I have found this in MTB, motorcycle and computer shops) that employ 'enthusiasts' get real uppity and selective how they treat customers that are not 'fully sik and hardcore'

Which means that norml customers go elsewhere and they get left with their phully phat sik mates sittin in the shop doin nuthin.

:puke to 'em I say

I go where the service is, if I want no service, I buy omline.
