I'm thinking of buying an unregistered car, but don't have a clue how I'd be able to get it home legally.
Are there permits in NSW which would allow you to drive an unregistered car? I don't really want to get it towed or trailered because it will be running, just out of rego.
Cheers
Andrew
yeah you can get a permit mate but its just like an rego inspection.

Right. In that case I'll try and bargain with the seller to include a pink slip with the car and get it registered before I take it home.
just grab some plates and drive the bugger home. done it heaps of times. just don't have an accident or get caught. he he he
Drink and drive your a bloody idiot!!! make it home you'r a legend !!!!
if it has a blue slip..... like recently regoed u can get a $30 permit ..... drive it for like a month.... call the RTA for more info
Get a trailor the safest way or screw some plates onto it
How far is it from home ???
Is the car servicable also makes a difference
yeah, if its not far drive it ,behind somebody you know, home.
Don't know about up in NSW, but down here you can hire a tandem trailer for about $50 for three hours. A permit will probably cost about the same, plus all the mucking around involved.
Ain't nothin' like the wind in your hair.
It isn't far at all, and the car is only a month out of rego and has plates. I could drive it home as is, but I'd rather play it safe.
Looks like the permit is the way to go.

yep and speed till your hearts content !!!
i was thinking the same thing as purplet3, trailer is probably safer, same money, and safer for you cos you dont really know enough about the car.

trailer be the go...unless its only a few k's. We brought a car home from the coast (bout 150ks) on a trailer. Good thing cause we got home and and i think it would of prolly caught on fire on the way with the fuel line the way it was.
....and bad wiring etc.
Go the trailer
To be honest i have done the plates thing a few times
KG60 - Raf did it too when he took his split that he sold to the freighters to ship to Brisbane as he had sold it.
I think he paid more in fines than he sold his split for :jesus
Futue te ipsum!!!
what fish said, is totally stupid. as if you drive unregistered then the worst is driving unregistered... but if you put other plates on then your up for deception or fraud. there was someone on here recently done for that.
either get a permit for the day. they are about 37bucks. ring the rta and ask what you need, but yeah i think you need an inspection. or negotiate like you said. if he at least gets you the pink slip, then you can go straight to the rta and get a temp pass. these vary in time depending on how far the 'direct' route home is.

go the trailer option for the $50 or so dollars youre covered and so is the person you could likely hit?
Its like a $750 fine driving an unregistered uninsured car
my first car a mini 850 when i bought it it was unregistered and so we drove home late at night but it broke down halfway and the police saw it and stopped and had a look and bye bye $750 and we then had to pay the $50 for the trailer anyway
marcel
actually i think its jsut under a 1000 bucks as of two months ago.

The car has plates and it's rego expired a month or so ago, so I think I'd have been okay as long as I could prove I was taking it for repairs/rego inspection (at least this is what I was told by the RTA when my brother left it a bit close to the mark to get his car pink slipped).
In any case, it's not my problem anymore. The seller is being a dick about the whole thing, so I'm passing on it.

if you had a letter of intent out lining the reason for the trip, along with the place of destination and of the start of the journey, with times etc, you should be ok. That's what I did for my buggy to go get a blue slip. After all, you are taking it home so you can fix it up and get it regoed so that should count as taking for repairs. I am assuming that the car has working brakes, lights etc.
I drove an unregistered car from Wollongong to Sydney. Here's what you do.
1. The car has to be roadworthy.
2. You get a pick slip.
3. You go to an RTA office and pay rego for a time period (1 day for me).
4. They give you a window sticker for your windscreen and you do what you like for that time period as it's leaglly a registered vehicle.
The amount you pay will depend on the time duration that you going to get the permit for and they will problly ask you where your going to drive it. The day rego cost me about $50 including the pink slip. But remember the car has to be roadworthy. The car that i bought like yours was just out of rego so I had no problems.
Good luck.
I always use a flat bed tow truck. I use only tilt tray trucks with wheel tie downs.
Never had to pay more than $55 for a trade tow, and no hassles, no strain and very easy for the times when I could not be at either beginning or end destination.
Personally I would rather pay $100 for a flat bed tow than hire a trailer and find a car to tow it.
Still if you have access to a trailer for free and a vehicle suitable to tow, then go for it. Just not my idea of easy.

I'm with you on this one.
I have a trailer and a car suitable to tow it, but its easier to get a towi to get it for me whan its only a local job.
Costs you about $50 for a local tow and it saves you all the probs driving in the trafic with a trailer.
