Just an idea at the moment, but if I get bored(nothing to do now the splits finished) How hard would it be to convert a split into a baja so I can do some serious off road driving and be able to take my camping gear, would I have to cut the rear guards and open the engine up as the beetles do, If I cut the roof open would I need a roll cage.
As I said just running through some ideas at the moment.
As I can get my hands on an early 50's double door semaphore bus, its in really good condition and should be strong enough for a baja.
Cheers
Dave
Yeah, ive seen pics of ians bus but I want to really chop this one so it looks more like a proper baja, cut down front and rear guards, engine on display, chopped wheel arches, roof chopped out, full open top job.
Think its best with the 55 double door as it has the strength of the supports for the double doors, shame really as its a mint bus, but hey its free.
Cheers

Baja a bay bus, please dont chop up a split unless its already rather dead.
Alex.
i think your stirring... dare ya! :P
Simply Cruzin'...
i thourt he might have been fishing but that db split is cool
DOnt do anything, just raise it and put on some large diametre tyres, they would have good entry/exit angles as they have little very little overhang of the body, so no need to chop it up..
But this is a joke, isnt it??
.
Take out the semaphores, throw them away nobody wants them. Fill up the holes , less wind drag going round corners.
You could always put a Transit front end on it!!
That red and white one now runs 35 inch BF Mudders and a renault box..... Go on hack it to pieces.....:thumb
Seriously if its in good nick, than sell it to a restorer and you'll have enough to buy a bay and all the gear to Baja it.

Yeh hack it up put a real motor in it and actually be able to drive it where ya want without having to leave 2 hours early cause you are so slow.

Simply Cruzin'...
Now theres an idea, dont know of anyone whos made a double door into 4 doors each side, That doesnt sound too hard,
Will have to get the measure out this weekend.
Also twoguns, like the pics, thats what I was thinking about, but cutting the back a bit more and putting a cage around the engine, also a bit of a chop over the cab.
Cheers
Dave
I`ve got my `59 Kombi which is original paint etc.
I don`t think I`ll get time to restore it so if you are interested we could do some kind of a deal.
I reckon it would be a good donor for body sections to lengthen yours.
For sure.
Here`s a picture of it,
I`m in the Adelaide Hills.
If you are interested, give me a call and you can come and have a look at it.
I might keep the roo bars to go on my Oval though.
Cheers
Graham.

Baby Loves to Mumbo
Graham.
That would be great.
I was also thinking of putting the front of the splitty on the back, so people will not know if I was coming or going.
It could be called a double split winow.
