I got myself a '76 kombi which i am told is ex army and is yellow...so i assume it is RAAF.
I have been trying to find some history on these busses.
What they were used for..etc. Google turns up basically nothing.
Any info would be great
🙂

also did any use to have sirens on top...ewww flashy lights
my bus seems to have mouting bolts.
RAAF ones might have been aircrew or ground crew transporters as they would of required orange flashing lights on the roof when on the tarmac, yellow/orange was used for GSE ground service equipment, now days the vehicles are camo green. hope this is what you are after, yes i was in the RAAF but not that long ago to see them in action.

Well,
that looks a liitle like the safety yellow colour of our trucks/vans etc from back then, and if it was a flight line vehicle then we would have put a rotating beacon on it as well. But, is there green paint under the yellow? or a different colour under there? as that also looks like ... whats that colour????, sort of a burnt orange that a lot of Kombis have, as opposed to a real 'F*** Off' yellow that the safety vehicles had.
There was a line on this somewhere in the General Chat I think, that had a picture or two of the RAAF Air Traffic Vans. But I'll take a look on the sites here at work and see what I can turn up.

'Ah, whatever................'
Knew it was there somewhere, thanks Mike.
So hows the RAAF Rat van going for you now?
But back on topic, I'll see what I can find out about double sliding door vans. Someone at work mentioned seeing a picture of HMAS Melbourne with VW's on the deck on the way to Vietnam.
'Ah, whatever................'
Penguin, The paint is old and abbused.. although when i pulled back an interior panel i found a great example of the colour. It seems to be that colour throughout. I cut back the paint to see if it was savable, and got back to primer in a few places.

Thanks mike, was a good read
🙂 I would like to see your RAAF rat!.
Also this one isnt double door, incase people where thinking that. Make a great mod though.
You recon i'd be able to find a flahy light to go on the roof
🙂
Okay
the inside colour really looks like GSE (safety) yellow. The outside may have just been faded/affected by the light (or my eyes playing tricks on me). Flashign lights are easy to get. However the permit to have them working is another thing altogether.(Not sure if you can even mount it without the permit either)
PS. Where is behind you???
PPS. RAAF IS NOT ARMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😠 we think :P, they just act :P:P:P:P:P Chill folks, (just sledging) :P, hey buzzbug 😉
'Ah, whatever................'
yeah i was just told when i bought it, it was army, then found out the colour was raaf!
So i wasnt so sure what it was.
Also behind you....wells its behind you.
But really i am just up the road from you in Kenmore.
I'll change my location, been meening to do it for a while

Ahhhh,
oh well. You will probably find that Army vans were probably green all over or green with a white roof. RAAF ones could have been green, green and white, or yellow depending on what they were used for. They yellow safety colour used for GSE was basically for anything that travelled across the aircraft parking areas or runway. That way the pilots wouldn't run into them.
I think the colour wouldn't be too hard to match with a modern code. Not sure if we would still have the code anywhere, but can ask about if you really want to get a respray from somewhere.
'Ah, whatever................'
aventually i will want a respray, but yeah i will need it to respray the areas where the areas where the rust is coming out. Got friends of the family that own a smash repairs shop, can mix any paint we want. So a code would be Gold!
The original colour for my RAAF bus is signal orange I believe, or so the plates tell me...
Cool,
shall see what either the MEOMs guys (and girls) or finishers can tell me.
'Ah, whatever................'
Could very well be that.
Have you checked behind any panels to see if there is a colour change? not sure how they used to paint them (or if we painted them at all ). It is possible that the Signal Orange was the colour that VW supplied them in and that it was just 'close enough' to the GSE yellow.
Shall check anyway.
'Ah, whatever................'
No haven't had a chance to check yet, but I will have a closer look this weekend when I get my hands on the bus.
I have a feeling the bus was actually assembled in Germany, then shipped here, as there are lots of strange german markings and anomalies in the original spec that isn't consistent to what was produced here.
Then again I could be full of it.. but will confirm over the weekend. 😉
Some good info...any more?
bump!
Thought there was another thread somewhere

Penguin (still asking.............)
'Ah, whatever................'
My father was in the air force back in the 60's, he worked in the radar towers, he was an electrical engineer.
Told him I bought an ex-RAAF bus hoping to spark a little glint in the old mans eye, alas he stilll thinks I'm crazy..
Deep down though, I know he understands, after all, he's first car was a fastback! 😉
We have 77 ex RAAF bus. It originally was military green which can be seen on cargo floor area.
It was repainted orange and white after RAAF service and bought by RAAF member who brought it to WA about 15 years ago.
We are restoring at moment-it had been superbly kept and maintained.

Okay,
for all the resto colour people I managed to ask the right people here on the base without going to the Museum. Amazing what we still have squirrelled away in books and stuff.
It is called Golden Yellow and is a federal Standard Colour.
A brand name recently used by BOEING to paint AMB SQN GSE was PROTEC # 304-2356 purchased from the Ipswich Paint Barn, speak to Justin.
It is High Gloss fast dry and contains lead nearly 20%, therefore you need to wear appropriate PPe iaw the MSDS sheet.
As I am not sure how many of you really want to use a paint that has a high lead content, maybe if you contact the paint barn or if you can find the colour in another book etc, then they may be able to recommend an acrylic or two pack that is damn close to the right shade.
Cheers

'Ah, whatever................'
i think matching it be the go. Thanks Penguin for your efforts😀:bounce
a little bit more info..
apparently the 'golden yellow' was a GMH colour, if you have a look at this page there is also a lot of other 'service' colours..
