Last Weekend went up to Halls Creek (180ks up the Tanami Track, WA) and and picked the 2nd of the three Bays that I bought a while back. This time towed it home behind the "Desert Splitty" with the "A" bar. There was a bit of 2nd gear work in the hills for the first 50ks on the Tanami but once onto the plains sat on 70-80ks in 3rd all the way. The Splitty did it with no probs although next time I'll put some smaller diameter tyres on the back. It's currently running 245/70x16s which are 750mm diam, I've got some 225/75x15s that are 700mmdiam which will let the engine rev a bit more and maybe get into top gear. We travelled after dark as the daytime temp up here now is over 40 every day, and it is generally gets down to about mid 20s by 4am and starts rising again at 4.30am when the sunrises. Fuel consumption was no worse than the trip in in the heat of the day (2-4pm) sitting on 100ks which suprised me considering thats it's only a 1600 TP.
The Bay followed very well with no swaying or uneasiness at all even considering the Tanamis' record for destroying springs and tearing spring hangers off trailers due to the corrugations and dips and bumps. I like travelling in th edark as the headlights show up the dips and bunps allowing you to pick a smoother part allthough at times you tend to be swapping from one side of the road to the other to get the best track.
Cheers, Ian.
