I was wondering...
I'm doing up a 65 beetle and i'd really love to have it as a 2 seater. The rear seat is out and I want to remove the seat belt bolts and any other bits not needed.
If I present the car (in N$W) for a blue slip with no rear seats or belts but proper front ones is that cool with ' da authorities' ?
Or will that magically require an engineering certificate?
I also saw a beetle at the show that had a bench seat used as the only seat in the front. Looked great. Is taht legal or able to be
done legally?

the bench seat would need an engineers cert. but as for taking out the rear seat. leave the belts in for now and get it regoed with the rear seat in and then take the rear seat out afterwards easy. if you ever get told off just put it back in.

it wouldnt B too hard to get some MDF, cut to fit the frame where seat used to be.. cover with carpet, and have storage space back there..
as nick sed, bench seat will need engineers cert

Would just be nice if I could carpet over the whole rear seat area and maybe fit some speakers in there. My wife has a 70 beetle with rear seats but no seat belts fitted, ever. What's the go there, do I get booked if somebody uses the back seat and has no belt? I sure as shit aint gonna fit them now but would be nice to know i can carry somebody back there (besides the dachshunds that is)

hey sax...i'm in the same boat as u...i'm restoring my type 3...and i have made it 2 seats only....rear seat is gone...and i built a modular box out of mdf in there wth a lockable gas strut lid that auto opens when the lock is turned....its very very cool...but as i have been told by many people, as i am unsure if it'll pass...everyone who's seen it says they cant see y they'll say no when u physically cant seat people there...i am under the impression that only when u modify the frame, any structural part of the car, or move seat belt mountings, are u required to get it engineered....
either way though...do it....it makes my t3 look awesome...and ur bug will look the same...:thumb
the pic attached is the box withput the front...so u can see what the structure is...now its carpeted...

my car also never had rear belts.. (untill a few weeks ago)
if they were never there.. then it's legal to carry people without them.. if theyre there they have to be used.. and if theyve been installed, they have to be maintained..
i chose to install some, as it's just safer.

What about when you renew your rego, get the seating capacity changed to 2 instead of 4, that way nobody can complain.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

That sounds fair to me but the RTA is the epitome of nazism in the ultimate police state.

Love the type 3.

I have done this exact same thing in NSW, no back seat and a deck to house the stereo. The car was blue slipped and is now registered as a 2 seater(not coupe) no prob at all as long as no one sits in the back.
I was hoping there was somebody who did this and got away with it.
Now, what is a good seat (of any persuasion ) to EASILY replace the two worn out lowbacks?
I've heard people mention Honda seats, are they hard to make fit?
