i was just reading in one of the columns about registering a 1600 in NSW should have front discs? is this true? i'm doing up a 60 beetle with a 1917cc from ground up and haven't heard of this, it has no rego so will have to get a blue slip. Can anyone shed any light on this for me.
Thanx..

i`m with barls ,anything over 10% more capacity than stock has to have things upgraded and engineered, best thing is to go to rta site where there is a list of engineers and find one close to you , and give him a ring and tell him what you are doing and he should be able to tell you what needs to be done for compliance🙂

as a blue slip inspector , I have been reading the above remarks and most are incorrect . if you fit a 1600 engine to a beetle that origionally was manufactured with 4 wheel drums then discs must be fitted to the front and an engineers report obtained for the modification ( even if using factory bolt-on components) for NSW rego . if you are fitting a larger capacity engine to a late beetle (68-on) that has discs fitted to the front from factory , you are allowed an increase of up to 15% before requiring an engineers report . (i.e. 1584ml up to 1820ml ). once you go over the 15% you must legally obtain a report . once you increase engine capacity by more than 45% , you must also fit a collapsable steering shaft if not origionally fitted to that vehicle and upgrade the brakes.
do some homework prior to getting your engineers report as it will be far cheaper to include all modifications on one report , rather than getting an additional report later for items such as aftermarket seats , retractable seatbelts , brake modifications , lowering adjusters , aftermarket wheels ,
changing of seating capacity , chassis & structual modifications .
for further information or a referal to a trusted engineer call Wayne on 02-42725844 .

you can do it, and get away with it.. but as 2G's said, how will you go once the insurance inspectors have a look over it after a smash..

Hi

If you use a late 1300 twin port as the base for you 1600 or larger or even a new case and put an early engine number on it you could get away with it that way. But these rules are there for reason, with the extra power you need better brakes for all our safety.
