anyone got it in their beetle or otherwise? Thinking about putting it in because the original in mine looks shthouse and we're getting the ragtop put in. Should I just do it myself?

Is the headliner the ceiling carpet? 'cuz if it is , mine is black and it looks good, the only bit of the car interior which doesn't look shoddy.

I just sprayed my white/beige/whatever one with black vinyl paint stuff. Just make sure you mask/cover everything and do it in a ventilated environment, open the sunroof if you have one 🙂 Oh and do a few coats as well, mine is starting to get scratched from seatbelt buckles etc. and it's only been a few months

my 2c

If no tears just respray it.
Best if you can pop the windows as that stuff just sits in the car and sticks to everything. But looks real good.
If you want to replace in vinyl get a pro. They are a bugger to stretch in to place. I have heard there are trick with heat guns etc but too much to learn

If you are doing it your self - go cloth / velour?
I had grey and it looks great. Stretches alot more and you dount need to heat it

That's nice man! Did you do it yourself or get someone to do it for you?

It was already done - ask bugboy where ther's a good trimmer in Melbourne. I'm sure that it wouldn't cost much.
I know that Cruisin Car Carpets up here in Sydney charge around $300 to supply and fit, so I'm sure tat there must be someone in Melbourne could do it for you. I think that it'd be a bitch to do it yourself.
Good luck

I'm also looking to get a grey headliner, and looking for trimmers in Melbourne.

I talked to Brent from Car Trims in Camberwell, but he wasn't able to quote a price, or source the headliner. I can get it myself, but would be looking for a trimmer with some volksie experience..

If you do it right as said you can spray your headlining and it will look factory , no probs.
First give it a really good clean with soapy warm water and a soft scrubbing brush. Wipe clean then wipe over with prepsol or similar. As said mask up well or take windows out and open up the doors of the garage and your car.
Up to you but a satin finish looks the best. Gloss black can look abit crappy and home done , my opinion only. I always do 3-4 very light coats and let them dry in between coats. Builds the colour up better and no runs. Just doing the whole interior of the Notch and the satin black looking awesome . I'm after a very dark interior so just remember before you start spraying , a black headliner really makes a difference. Cheap to , i picked up 2 nice black hi-backs for $100 and spent $50 on spray etc. Few small repairs and apart from the carpets thats $150 for a new, fresh interior. Just take your time doing it and prep well. Have fun whatever you do.

Cheers Dan 😉

Thanks dan but the headliner has got tears everywhere and they're along the sides (which won't be affected by the ragtop). Still hunting.

by the way: anyone know someone in melbourne to put the ragtop in too?

I have mine done professionally.
Black interior...they did the (headliner) roof & the sides & floor ($786) in 2001
With the floor covering I asked them to do the foot area in pieces I can take out (like car mats) so you can see/check for (rust/roadworthys etc) ...looks really nice. (done at B & B Trimming in Ipswich Qld)
Got new black door cards, then got seats professionally upholstered from Trim Tek at Nerang (Qld).
He done them black with white trim & leather sides & the VW emblem embrodered into the back of the seats....very nice.
I can post some pics if your interested to see it.

Back in the 60s I painted My headliner with flat black spray can.... looked OK...

I saw a Superbug done in black cloth type material, can't remember what its called... I didn't really like it...

I know I wanted to use that type of material but Mick Motors only sells the original type...

Its best to get someone who has done them before....
don't let them practice on Your beetle.....
some huge price differences.....
Best of Luck...
