I've put this in the tech section but I'll whack it here too.

Having got a good look at the garage sale beetle, the rust between body & roof is irepairable.
So I must build a hot axe convertable. I've never really had time for the fakes, but, if I lose the roof I lose 60% of the rust. Common sense says this is the way to go.

Therefore, I need the wisdom of anyone who has done it, & importantly, I need to hear from those who have fucked it up!
Especially if you know where you went wrong.
I need to know all the ins & outs.

I imagine you only get one shot, so I need to get it right.

Means the roof rack I have had in the shed for 8 months, stay there a bit longer......😎

Yes, I got it at a garage sale.

As for it being bad news. Are you talking about the car or the roof rack?
I, personally, don't care for the axe jobs. But in the end it won't be my car & the boy seems stoked that it will be topless.

I just don't want it to end up a hit & miss affair.

I know I've mentioned this idea before but if you successfully cut off the roof and the body is sufficiently strengthened, cut down the windscreen and somehow fit a chopped roof- it could even be made to be removable

They got some beasts on that site Pete & that roof idea seems like a good one.
But still no one's told me if there's a right or wrong way to go about this.

try and find out what extra panels they put in karmahn ragtops. that might help.

Alternatively, if you're feeling real brave. Separate the pan from the body. Cut the heating ducts out from under the car. Replace them with thick wall square steel tube and put diagonal braces around the bottom edges of the doors. Should be stiff as all hell then. The tube can double as roll bar mounting points as well.

While you are there you could remove an inch or two from the bottom of the body or even channel the pan. Then dump the suspension and the seats. As for the windscreen frame, make up something like a factory convertable frame but cut is down an inch or two. 😎

that plus a carson style roof would be awesome. :thumb

Talk to an engineer first but it all should be legal.

Certainly fucking cheaper than what's being suggested........😠

I'm helping my son build his first car, not going for best of show first time out.

And there's also the minor point that what is legal overseas, will never see the road in NSW.

That's a tad more ratshit than what I've got.

The body I've got, for the most part, is straight & in reasonable condition.

The problem is that the rust in what used to be the gutter has got to the point where the roof is seperate from the body above the right rear side window. Then goes in toward the centre of the car so that there is not enough of the roof to weld it back together. So a chop is the go.
I've tried to post a pic but it's too big.

May have to get onto the RTA to find out what's what.

sorry to be the one to tell you spook, but anything requiring a engineer's certificate is gonna cost something. 🙁

having said that, if you do all the work yourself, you will cut the cost down by heaps.😉

p.s. don't use a gas axe to cut the roof off, they make a real mess. :puke
use the really thin grinder cutting wheels or an electric hacksaw. Both of these are heaps more precise.

Never was using an oxy, that's just a phrase.

Electic hack saw. Is that one of them things looks like a jigsaw mated with a jack hammer? They look like good fun.

Everything will be done in the shed so the cost will stay down. The cutting I'll do myself & a mate of mine welds by the tinny, so I see a major consumption of alcohol........😉
