From looking at a number of posts on this forum I have come to the realisation that apart from VW, the car of choice for many dubbers is a Subaru. In my family I am the VW driver, while Rod drives a Forester XT Turbo.

Why is this ?

Boxer engine, same maternal sounds of the thump-thump-thump puts us in a dreary daze, bit like falling in love. Plus they are schweet cars!

The new series look absolutley beeeeautiful!

if you drive a VW you know what a unique driving experience that is. if you have driven an earlyish subi you will find it equally unique. had a 82 for a couple of months, was the most fun thing i have ever driven - great power NO body role (at all, not even through warrandyte!) great gearshift, sloppysteering with no feedback at all, damn that thing was crazy.

So your saying out of the thousands or hundreds of active members on here 4 or 5 drive subarus as well

Not much of a coincidence I'd say.

Wonder how many drive other german cars, or aussie cars or jap cars
might be a good poll topic

ps we nearly bought one as well many times over, but the foresters are too small and the new outbacks & imprezas are just plain ugly

Well here we go again ... I didn't start this thread for you to critise others choice ..... (I am also a Subaru owner .... and if you think a forester is too small then what is big enough a MACK truck ??????).

If you go back to threads such as the one titled "What would you buy with $50 grand etc etc" you would see that a number of people actually want to own Subaru's......

Beauty is in eye of the beholder ..... I am sure that many people think your VW is ugly ! .....

The endless search for more power? Pretty cool mod when done correctly.

Can't say I'd ever try it myself.

yup, breeding is a good idea, my bus is the offspring on VW and Subaru, just in the middle of a heart transplant, but certainly makes for a good mix.

I used to have a MY01 WRX - but sold that to buy the cabriolet. Fair swap I say. Now my missus tootles around in an BA XR6, and I still have the cab as my daily driver.

techy techy

I didn't critisise anyone, just stated that a forester is too small for our needs, perfect for a single couple but not a family of 4 with dog, strollers, bikes etc :duh

As for ugly things, the previous impreza & outback looked good jus tthink they tried too hard with the new ones. Funny I think the new forester looks better than the old.

Yeh and a lot of people probably think my beetle looks ugly, actually a large percentage of the world probably thinks they're ugly as well

mmmmm, subis.

Subis are the best of the jap cars. look good, run good, sound good.
only drawback these days are ricers who think their impreza gx's are wrx's. personally, i think the liberty is one of the most attractive cars around.

I like WRX's, as far as I'm concerned they are the only worthy Japanese Sports Car.

But since I grew up in the 70's and 80's I love V8s that's why I have a XR8. :thumb

mmm...not sure about that.

Cause see, not even Stan Pobjoy can build a hot VW motor that is garranteed for 3 years an unlimited kms (subaru garrantee) and he builds great motors.

I have heard good stories of many kms on VW motors, up to 300,000ks on a stock 2l type 4 with oil and filter changes every 5000ks. People are telling me with that regular services on a subbie it will go for a million ks. And you have to admit, VW motors never make 165hp stock unlike my subbie motor which does.

Also, I looked into getting a type 4 built for my buggy and it was real expensive, in fact too expensive for me to afford. So I went with what I could afford.

I'd love to build a big, turbo type 4 motor but it just costs too much and they still leak oil. Sorry, I'll stick with the Subbie for now. But I admire your loyalty.

Who remembers the old Sherpa 800cc 3 cylinder? 🙂

Then there was the Fiori. 🙂

Not in the true fashion of Subaru spirit.

Yep it is the grunty sound of the boxer motor that does it for me. Sorta like the V8 of the 4 cylinder world, but completley different.

I am not into the BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH eight inch exhaust tips that look like a bulk buy International Roast coffee tin with the label taken off.

A nice muffler on a Suby with that ballsy throaty rumble is very distinctive, and like our VW's can be distinguished by sound alone.

It is not easy to tell your common garden variety inline four cylinder cars apart by sound alone!

Thay are great cars, but what about an EVO VIII? Not many others I suppose unless you think older cars like 240Z, or Datsun 1600 etc...

I'm not into those fast and furious rice cars.
Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota etc I'm sure there good reliable cars but they don't do it for me.

It's probably because I've seen to many Wankers driving them.

But a WRX stands alone, maybe because it is so different to the others. :thumb

i have to agree with flyinvw.... the wrx cant be beat for value if you are after a hotrod... as for the EVOIII i think they are a little expensive... they are priced up with the WRX STI.. and cannot see the value that is added for the money spent. sure they are great cars... loved the test drive i had of the STi (and scared the crap outta mscabrio also :thumb ) but the money would be better spent on a WRX then get the turbo upgrades to make 240kW etc...
see.... air and water do mix 😉
