I just pulled the gbox out of an old 63ish beetle and the rear drums (wide 5) look different to normal drums
theres 5 ribs on the front, would they be type 3 wide 5's possibly, as most beetle drums i thought were smooth?

Some beetle ones have 5 ribs but they might be type 3 wagon jobbies.
Check the width of them. That's where the difference is.

I just mearsured mine for ya. My type three rear drums are approx 65mm in width (not including the backing plate) from the inner edge of the drum to the wheel-mounting face. The beetles are around 50mm I think.
