I just had a look at a '70 1500 beetle and I couldn't quite place it in terms of overall specs.
Here's what i know:
bj front with disks
no rear demister things behind the rear quarter windows
manual
only driver's side rear-view mirror
4 grille decklid

The main thing is that I think it was swing axle but it was suggested to me that it was IRS.

Thanks for any help

...everything you mention above is correct for a '70 model, except the 4 vent rear lid - it should be a 2 vent lid....but I have seen this conversion done many times (allows for more cooling air without having to lift the lid). I would almost guarantee that it is a swing axel car, unless it is (or was) a semi-auto.... some people consider that swing axel vehicle are also IRS (which is true - the rear suspension can operate independantly from one side to the other), but true IRS has CV joints in the axels.

Any Pics?

Nah I didn't take the camera. Wasn't much to look at anyway. Made me appreciate getting back into mine even with its little problems. Think it probably is swing 'cause it looked the same as mine when i popped my head under. Ah well - I'll keep searching.
