Why did you choose a VW in the first place?
I know I didn't want one as my dad had always had them and I thought they were ugly, but when he gave me a 2 year old beetle and I started realising that it was completely unconventional -engine in the back, aircooled etc. I was hooked. I never was a conformist even as a kid and this suited me to a tee. Since then I have never been without an aircooled VW and that's now 30 years.

Same as KOMBIDOG only it was a '66 beetle, mum had the beetle dad had the '72 kombi then mum made the mistake of buying me a copy HOTVWS in about '85 and it was all over from there😉

I had my first brush with bugs when I was 17, bought a 71 super bug when I was at college back home in england.
Bought it for 1750 quid. Blew three engines in it, the last being a 1641.
Came home from a lads holiday to spain with the lads to find that the old man had had enough of it sitting in the road, so he sold it. I was arriving home as it was being trailered away.....
The voices in my head made me buy one, then another and another adn another!!! they told me not to stop untill i had to many to count.... still collecting them 🙂
steff..................
Life with out a v-dub is no life at all!!!!!
Gibbo, I feel your pain! I remember finding out that parents got fed up with a complete gearbox and transaxle in our back garden in London and so one night they dumped it in a skip a few streets away but I was able to follow the oil drips all the way from our gate to the skip in question and retrieve it.They were not happy!
I was kind of thinking about buying an old Triumph Spitfire or maybe a Beetle when I was 17, I ended up going to Bug Jam..............................:thumb
My dad said they'd be easy cars to work on, cheap to buy and cheap to insure. Most importantly he was willing to buy me one and I badly wanted a car. One thing led to another and we ended up with the car in my avatar.
If I'd known then what I know about these cars now I probably would have avoid them like the plague. But now I own one, I absolultely love it.
friend gave me the kombi in my avatar but was a bit too rusty but by then was hooked so i bought the beetle and its gone on from there :thumb

my dad certainly didnt want me to get a vw (even tho he had one, and his dad had 3)
but i showed him! hehehehe
what made me get one? i dont know, ive always wanted one.
in the beginning, the universe was created.
this made alot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.
I am actually a converted VW lover. I was originally into Mini's and after having 4 of them i thought it was time to get a beetle.... With some gentle persuation by PHAT BUG and his awesome low rider "PHATVW", i just had to have one. My 62 i have not owned for long but by hell i aint about to look back. Having a ball and plan to continue on that too.
My great grandparents had 2 of them also. An oval and a early 60's model like the one i have now.
Loven it 😀 😎
same as kombidog but mine was a 61 karman ghia

i had a bug as my first car,, sold it to buy a 4x4 for towing my horses and had always had 4x4 cars now sold my horses a few months ago and now a bug is back ,they are so cute the little bettles,,,,,,,,,,,colleen
30 odd yrs ago went on surfing safari with a mate
in his kombi camper down nsw sth coast.
great trip great van & that was it first a beetle
then a kombi & kombis ever since.
I have always loved cars. But it wasn't till in my teens that I started to like VWs. Before that I thought they were a bit lame. Then I came a cross a chopped, dumped and moon disc-ed beetle in Street Machine Magazine. I loved it. I learnt about them and fell in love with the engineering concept behind them as well as the classic styling.
A bit later, I went off V8s and I nearly bought a squareback for my first car. Then a mate lent me a kombi for a while and later gave it to me a few weeks before it's rego ran out. It wasn't worth saving sadly.
After I got married I bought a 60' beetle cheap and unregistered to do up, it's now my buggy. In between, we bought a two tone 67' beetle that I re-registered and drove off and on for 3 years or so. I still miss that car.
I don't want to be without one of some sort now. Except maybe for a Pre-A series 356, but then it might as well be a VW anyway.
🙂
have been into modified cars for a long time and one day i heard a beetle goes past running 48 ida's and big exhaust and thought that sounds awsome
Also saw a vw racing at the old oran park drags before eastern creek was around and this thing was knocking off v8's left right and centre
the beetle i've got now came from a family friend who died a couple of years ago and now i'm restoring it in his memory. he owned it since 72 so i've grown up with it
Now i want another beetle 🙂

Went looking for something that was a truck when I wanted it & a car when I wanted that.
The Kombi was just the right vehicle for the job.
Became a VW nut through the reliability & simplicity.
Well my friends are gone & my hair is grey, I ache in the places where I used to play.
35 yrs ago stuck in sand with my mum (63 bug), at smokey cape, near south west rocks, 35 years later & 10 bugs to boot still got got a bug.
Johno
A bug was all I could afford at 17, 25 pounds for a 63 in battleship grey, did some of my courting in it (thats another story hehehe)
It really impressed the gals, slow, noisy, uncomfortable, no heater on them cold english nights, well there was but if you had it on you got carbon monoxide poisoning, then had to drive with the windows open which defeated the object.
Well after writing off a Ford with it, I had to get another one, a 64 in battleship grey for the princely sum of 35 pounds, after falling asleep at the wheel and landing on top of a Farmers fence I got the third a '65 bug and guess what.........that was in battleship grey too, bloody expensive at 75 pounds. That lasted far longer until I was converted to Kombis.
i just like attention..... 😉
Simply Cruzin'...
me my mates a few kombis and surfboards they moved on and im still hangin on 15 years later
I think there's just something in all of us that lets us know we have to have one.
and I love the dub wave. 😉

My dad had a kombi in the 70s and did the surfing in the 70s thing mum had a bug also in the 70s and both loved them but when i would not move from the tv when herbie was on i think they were thinking oh no we have made a vw nut and tryed to push me away from them but it didnt happen i had to have one so in 2001 i found a kombi with my name on it and did a few things to it and its still with me and anit going anywere. Then i seen a baja giving a 4wd a hard time so i had to have one of them and a year ago i got one and went out and gave many 4wds a hard time and loving it, I have just bought another so at age 20 i have 3 to my name and will not have it any other way
You only need two tools
Wd40 if it don't move and it should
Duct tape if it move's and it shouldn't
Converted from Minis/ Mokes, via Alfas, Fiats, Jap cars and then onto Kombis. The boss missed the Kombi so we bought a new one which she took over....I then drove a mates Beetle back from Avalon to Kellyville, loved the quirky old car feeling and it all started from there.........I'm hooked...best value cheap fun I ahve ever had with a car....Still have my Alfas but the Beetle has this effect on you, even when it is hard pressed getting over 70mph.
My first car was a 62 Beetle which my Dad found and god rest his soul he hated VW's :cussing but the Bro and I luv'm, had and have them and drove him Krazie about them. :bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce
I had a Subaru Leonie, it had a blown head gasket, swapped it for a 67 split, thought it was a good deal, had one ever since...
