Depending on your point of view, i had a bad day last week. My tv died. Was a 68cm Philips, stereo, that I bought when stereo tv's first came out. its about 15 years old. Ive wanted a new tv for aaages but havent been allowed.
So today we went out looking at a 68cm Phillips package for around $1400. But then I found a very nice telly 107cm LG "DLP" wide screen thingo jobbie. Using puppy dog eyes, emotional blackmail and a lot of begging, I am allowed to get it. Although it is rear projected it doesnt look like it. The pictures look like plasma but dont burn out like plasma. Has a single light source surrounded by heaps of mirrors that spin around.... so says the salesperson at 2 different locations anyway.
I can get a factory second + a dvd player for $1000 less than rrp. (although you can talk down the rrp easy enough).
Anyone know much about these models? If they are better than plasma, why are there still plasma at double the price. I am totally in love with this TV even though it is about 4 times more money than what I was prepared to pay originally when I add the set top box, and I still dont get the dolby surround stuff. Just have to wait for the mortgage redraw to come.

The bulbs are VERY expensive to replace and do not have the life expectancy comparitable to getting a projector. The DLP technology is good but IMHO you would be better off getting a normal TV or a projector. :thumb

get a normal one (Sony) and wait for LCD tv which will be the best

Well, I dont know what the future LCD screens will be like but as far as current computer monitors go I dont think they are suitable for TV. They arent good when viewing at an angle and the ghosting on moving pictures isnt so good.
After reading these links, i have made up my mind.

Without the set top box, the pictures on the DLP are only as good as the regular projection tv, but watching DVD's the picture is bloody excellent (as it is with plasma). So I will get a SD set top box, and uppgrade to HD later. Cant wait and having a hard time keeping it secret from real life people I know. If I had of known it was going to be this easy I would have pulled the plug from the wall and told the missus the tv died a long time ago.

No rear projection TV is better than plasma.. and no plasma is better than LCD... I wouldn't get rear pro tv as the bulbs get dimmer , dimmer , dimmer then one day you will ask "why the hell is it so hard to see the picture" Then you have to fork out $$ for bulb. If you want a big ass TV spend a little more and get an LCD... rear pro's are very old technology and i personally would rather have this setup...
*A normal Flat Screen TV such as panasonic or sony up to 68cm (not widescreen)
*And a movie projector (widescreen)
Only use the projector when watching movies etc and use the normal telly for watching everyday stuff as not to waste the projector bulb..
Does this make any sense? it does to me.

Would have to agree. Bought a cheep arse 80cm TV for $500 with a 3 year warrantee. Projector will be used to watch movies etc only. Sorry but i reckon if you spend that many $$$$ you should get a picture a hell of a lot bigger than a 68 cm screen. Each to their own...

I agree with Tim and Mick, your everyday tv gunk doesn't need the royal treatment, and you'd be withering away the life expectancy of good equipment on rubbish. Face it - Ray Martin and Fatty Vaughtin just aren't worth it! A projector is going to give you the full movie experience for your DVD's and such, and because you only use it for special occasions, it'll last you donkey's.
I have a background in this stuff by the way. Lot's of pro's do exactly the same thing. The set up a standard idiot box with all the groovy sound gear, and then have a drop down screen directly in front for the projector.
That's my 2c. Have fun!
Awww I beg to differ. I want to watch the cricket and car racing and the bill and survivor and aerobics oz style in big tv too.
I had another look around this morning. The LCD TV are much better than a computer monitor, they arent white at the slightest angle. From a distance the give the best picture but also give the worst from up close. Your standard rear projection TV (with the 3 different colour lights) picture isnt sharp but this LDP is as good or near as, the plasma next to it. The LDP is also a lot cheaper. Thousands cheaper than the others, and by all accounts in 4 different stores now, 2 of which didnt know that I was particularly interested in the LDP, should outlast the others.
Changing the lamp in a DLP, however expensive they are, is better value than going out and buying a new plasma screen. I have paid the deposit. So long as the rest of the internals dont self destruct, I think I will be happy. Time will tell. I am nervous as hell since I only set out to spend $800 but had the kid in the lolly shop experience.
Thanks heaps everyone for your input

Hi Guys,
Just thought I would add my two cents worth, as part of my job is to spec million dollar boats with electrical gear. In my research LCD is th only way to go and is the way of the future. Most LCD TV/monitors will now have viewing angle of 170degrees (much better than this laptop) and yes the screen refresh rate is a little slower than most other TV types however if you look at Panasonics new range you will notice that they advertise extremely heavily the fact that the have high progressive scanning rates. The reason we use LCD on our boats is not only the quality of picture and technology(plus they can be used as a computer monitor) but the are the toughest built screens around. This does not effect the home user but if you use a plasma on a boat you will have extremely short life span as the gas crystals explode under vibration. Another point is Sony and Samsung have just opened a new joint LCD factory so keep your eyes out for some new developments, another handy fact is Japan has had the order to cease production of CRT TV's (standard TV's) in favour of the new technologies. In general I would recommend LCD to anyone but do not buy the cheap brands as they are using the leading companies old technology, as they say you get what you pay for.
Cheers
Greig

What I said..... I have just done an ad for sony japan and had a play with the latest LCD Tv. very cool, I will be waiting, a.for them to be released and b. for them to become cheaper
Oh and sony is the best....

Sony LCD are so far superior to anything else it is crazy.
Even the laptops have brilliant LCD screens - like film projected on glass.
even the navy is ditching the crt tubes and going lcd screens

Did a fair bit of research a few months ago when my olds decided to spend up big on a new TV. They'd been pummeled by talk about the life expectancy of plasma screens and how they'd need to be replaced after ~ 5 years. After researching it became apparent that this was for 1st gen Plasma's and that the newer plasmas MTBF was a hell of a lot higher. The LCD V's Plasma comparisons pasted further up in the thread were also perused and plasma came out as the winner in our situation (understandably its not going to suit every need, ie: on boats etc). They ended up getting a 104cm LG plasma and its amazing. Especially coupled with the HDTV STB. Viewing angle is 170 no problems, its great in bright conditions, theres no ghosting on fast moving images and its amazingly crisp and vibrant. That being said its a tad outside your budget, but LCD and Plasma are both still relatively new compared to TV.
If I had your budget I'd probably go spend a few hundred on a nice CRT based TV and put the rest in the bank and save a bit more while watching the price war continue to drive prices down on LCD and Plasma.
plasmas these days have an expectancy of 60,000 hours... much like a normal CRT TV.. LCD is becoming the new standard, where as plasma didn't really kick it off that well.
