lets not turn this into a thread about racial stereotyping please

so the government waqnts to ban high powered cars for p platers. why? why can't they say "ok, if your car has x amount of hp (as a rough guide), then you will have to go out on the skidpan and get a half day lesson on sideways control." take them to a race track and give them some laps so they know where the limit is. allow them to spin at least once, so they know how scary it is when their prie and joy is heading for the wall. actually, no, bugger it, do it for all cars, no matter how powerful - there are plenty of dickheads in corollas, datsuns, excels etc.

why do we have to do 50 hours driving, picking up all the bad habits of our parents? why not say that to get your licence you have to :
a) go to a skidpan somewhere and get basic driving lessons to teach you how to drive
b) get 10-20 hrs driving experience with your parents (include a couple of hrs in the dark, at least 3-4 in the wet)
c) at least 5x1hr lessons with professional driving instructors, like RAC
d) intensive half or full day car control course on the skidpan IN YOUR OWN CAR so you know where the limits are

then you won't need this silly 80km/h blanket for all p platers (which no=one obeys anyway)

99 percent of p plate drivers are fucked... i only say this cause i was one once and think back and go "how the freekin hell didn't i die, or kill anybody??"

I was irresonsible at the best of times and if i had owned a high powered car, i'm sure i would have killed someone..

Not saying that other drivers aren't bad either.. but with experience comes safety.. it's simple fact.

as if you'd let your kid drive a car that could get up to 200KMH or more... ??? where's the sense in that? i reckon they should govern all p platers cars to 40kmh or less

i remember when i got my license (and this is going to flare up again in this thread i can sense it).

i had no professional lessons just driving with family members during my Learners period. however i had been driving cars for ages. bush bashers and cars on private land. i drove my superbug all the time on a vacant property down the end of my street owned by a freind. sure i did doughnuts and burnouts and hammered around in my little super bug on the dirt. but i wouldnt drive like that on the road. i created a thread after i got my licence first go with no lessons. now im not being arrogant here but i got my license easily because im a good driver not because i drive like a dickhead which is seemed to be the general consensus of the posters on that thread. i had no professional lessons and therefore i was a shitty driver. now once again im not trying to be arrogant and talk myself up here im trying to prove a point. there are plenty of drivers like me who can drive well and safely and dont endanger other people around them when they get behind the wheel. but it is the other people, the hot headed ones that mean that every young driver should do a driving course. if i was offered a driving course right now i would take it. id love to put a car sideways in a controlled environment and test my limits as a driver and those of the car i was driving. there is no such thing as too much education. i have just turned 18 and do not consider myself to be an experience driver however i ask you all.......when you got your license in the 60's/70's do u think u would have been a good enough driver and know the road rules well enough to pass one of todays tests? i doubt it very much. they arent that easy u know.

power limits would be difficult to enforce with modified cars anyway. Im guessing they would have to dyno each car, and this doesnt deal with the fact that you could detune it (put on a restrictive exhaust, low boost etc).

I think they should go even further on education and make it a long involving learning process. I think this would filter out the idiots. In Germany it takes years to get a drivers licence. In fact it is so difficult even the boss of Ford failed it! They teach you the importance of correct tyre pressure, how to handle the car when it loses grip etc. Over there it is like the HSC to get your licence. Also they have good roads there which plays a good part.

The Hazard Perception test is ridiculous, I had to do it to get my green P's and again to get my blacks. It is easy to pass and its all a simulation. Getting red P's is a piece of piss. Too much emphasis on how to hill start and reverse park and not enough on more important things. Night curfews are in the same stupidity bin that 130km/h speedometer limit is.

Stupid tabloids like the Sydney Telegraph forget to mention that driver fatalities for young drivers have been consistently dropping over the last decade or so.
