splitties are hard... as they rot from teh inside. i dont know how often dave and i keep saying this. i feel for you mate. there aint no worse feeling than 'being had' or 'getting ripped'. and there is always to risk when you buy unseen, but really rust has got to be expected in most vw's somewhere.
hope it gets better for you mate. 😀

Yep, or you could have bought my van for 2k, at least you can see what your getting...
Any pics of the whole van?
Year, etc?
What a way to start a resto hey ?????
That's why I say "buy plastic" ..... it will never rust !
P.S ..... Sitting on a couple of blocks of ice will help to soothe your sore bottom, just make sure that you wrap the ice up in a teatowel or something, you don't want an ice burn down there !!!!!! :duh
🤘
Here I go again, I sound like a broken record and if I say Im getting bored of saying it then I must be bored.
Wes is right, ALL splits have rust if they havent been restored, and this also includes some that have been restored if they havent been done properly,
Too many people arre jumping on the split bandwagon and trying to sell them for prices that they see in English magazines.
We are not in England and there isnt the same demand for them over here.
Any split ( not including barnys or deluxes) that needs a resto should be under $2k.
As it will cost about another $16-$20k to do the job properly and that is doing it yourself.
Aussie splits were not dipped in rust proofing tanks when they were made and as such they rust from the inside around the roof, Once the roof has gone it is VERY expensive and hard to fix.
I would never buy a split if the roof has rusted through, even if it is only an inch or 2, as there are plenty out there to buy with the roofs in perfect condition.
I feel for you but as you said you should never buy from just pics.
If I am going to sell mine I would always organise that the buyer comes and see's what he/she is buying, that way it is fair on both parties.
Just a thought, the 57 panel for sale one here is a bargain, and as it has been shot blasted you can see what you are buying, might be an idea to cut your losses and go for something that doesnt need as much work, could save you thousands.
Again just my opinion, please feel free to ignore it or call me a wanker.
Cheers
Dave
What a bummer. You might be able to get hold of an 11 window shell with not so much rust and transfer everyhting over. Yours looks like a full interior model too from what i can see in the photos. Can you post some interior pics? I sought of agree what Dave has to say but even with finding a shell or bus that has a little bit of rust in say the out riggers or inner sill is not a lot different from finding one with a whole lot of rust in the same areas. When you pull either panels of (the slight rusted or completey rusted one) you still will have to replace the panel and should be similar in cost. Just something you should consider if you end up looking for another.
Cheers Nicko
maybe part it out... cut your losse and look at davids one form albury. for 8k you get a good head start.
Simply Cruzin'...
2gsb is right cut your losses buy Daves its the deaL,. mITCHELL
23 windows ...8 too many!
I totally agree wit the guys above.
We have all done busses or are in the process,
Thias is what we would do.
Its the roof that really stuffs your up.
To do it properly, its 3 peices of metal along the gutter, a lot of work.
Daves is a bargain , you have saved thousands on metal work and paint.
Cheers
Dave
or mine...
No not yours Byron. I am trying to get that myself,
Cheers
Dave
yes if i had the money & if i saw daves i would have definetly bought it
but too late now maybe, steve my repairer has seen gutter & said he has
to cut & replace anyway its just when i pulled door rubbers out i noticed
rust in all the channels as can be seen in third & fourth pics, once fully stripped will see if steve thinks its worth it mind you he said he has done worse, if its no go byronbus will here from me if its still for sale doubt it but
i still have a shell i bought from sgetty which is compered to this is in excellent condition.
i will have to wait & see (learner buyer wally)
Dont be too hard on yourself, everyone gets burnt once or twice.
there is always worse adn anything can be done. it will always come down to how much you can do or how much money you have. youve jsut gotta look at robks dcab, or lookat the b4 pic of mine. it had no floor or sub floor, no sills rust in nose. rust in some chasis. rust in rear corner of cabin gutter.

thats too bad, im sorry to hear about ur situation.
this was in the newcastle trading post for $2000 a few weeks ago. our local vw mechanic bought it unseen and (IMHO) was stung badly. heard the doors fell off in transit.

i would go back and ram my fist that far down his throat i would bring it back out with his hemeroid cream on it , there are way better splits out there ,but typically people are too lazy to go travel and find something good ,i would send that back or cut your losses ,you will be digging very deep for a long time fixing that up ,my $8000 bus is looking cheaper all the time
wow VWfool, that really is an eye-opener! i was afraid that mine was ugly when i bought it (some ugly cancer around roofline, btu mostly straight elsewhere), but mine had been sitting for 15 years and still has ALOT less rust, tyres that pump up and doors which move on their hinges (after i gave them somewhat of TLS with the WD40)

The last thing you want is rust everything else is a nice job compared to grinding, welding, grinding, filling IMHO
