This is sad news, I have been buying it for 20 years, sad to see it go.

"Guys,
I wanted you guys to be the first to know: Primedia has decided to cancel the publication of VWTrends, effective immediately.
Believe me when I say that this doesn't come as a big shock to me. The writing has been on the wall for months and I've tried to fight it. Over the past many months, you may have noticed that the number of ads in the magazine was steadily dwindling from around 40 pages to less than 20 pages in the March 05 issue (which won't even be printed I hear). Because of this, it was decided that after 28 years and 268 issues (65 of which I was the editor) in print, VWTrends was no longer worth the financial effort. In short, it was killed because nobody bothered to pay attention to it.
Since many of you on this list write/shoot for me (and most of which are owed money, I'm sure), I no longer have any authority to issue checks. However, tomorrow I plan to speak with Howard Lim (my ex-publisher) to find out what it takes to set you all straight. I don't want any of you to have to sacrifice because Primedia demands higher profits. Others of you advertised in the magazine, and if you've prepaid because of a contract, I'm sure you'll get a refund. Check with your ad rep to get that straightened out. But all of you, I just wanted to say good bye to.
Because of a family emergency today, I was out of the office, so I got laid off over the phone (so much for five years of loyalty); I wasn't given the opportunity to say a formal good bye to my co-workers and friends I've made along the way, so here I am at 1am on my wife's computer. I would like to thank you all for supporting me over the years, for answering my asinine questions, for always smiling for the camera, for putting up with my pestering tech articles, my odd ideas and my sometimes off-the-wall editorials... but most of all, I'd like to thank you all for accepting me and for helping me bring to the readers the best magazine possible. When I started this job, I didn't know a whole lot about Volkswagens, but you've all helped me become the enthusiast that I am today, and before I drift off into the sunset, I want to simply say thank you.
Just remember what I've always said, "People will never appreciate VWTrends until it is gone."
Well, now it's gone.

Well I didn't take it for granted.
It *#@%* all over a certain other US VW magazine, which can't even lay itself out properly so that you don't have to skip all over the place just to finish an article!!!

Thought something was up when they started advertising penis enlargement pills.

....I just sold all my VW Trends magazines on Ebay dating back from 84. :bounce:bounce:bounce Those guys where the best - I loved the Dan Leadbeter days. You'd write to those guys and they'd send you back a whole wad of stickers and other promotional stuff. One guy came out to the Nats in Richmond for a story didn't he Dave?

This and Hot VW's was what gave us inspiration in the 80's back in the UK. I used to (still do!) drool over all the hardcore drag cars , cals , sand rails etc etc. Wished i could jump on a plane and do that stuff. Without doudt this mag helped shaped the scene in so many ways.
As said before look at the bigger picture. One less mag out there giving us what we want and more the VW scene dips into the shadows. Real shame!

Okay if you want to blame anybody blame me. I purchased this magazine for many years now and never subscribed becasue every magazine I subscribe to folds within a year. I'm cursed. Well I hate to say it but I have done it again. I subscribed earlier this year and now look what i have done. I knew i should have subscribed to some v8 mag.

I reckon I am not speaking out of turn to say if you write back, tell him that the Oz VW crowd are sad to see the mag go. I guess they will never know just how much we read the thing,( and reread it after we bought second hand versions at swap meets ).
Not a good thing to cop at this time of year, I know he and the rest of the crew get new jobs (won't be the same though) but still not nice.
Just hope they enjoy the new ones as much as they obviously did this one. Great mag, will be very sorely missed.

Gee I am really glad that I just resubscribed two months ago.......not to mention that my old beetle was supposed to be featured in the April issue (they have had my slides and story for over a year).

That is a real loss to the community. And Ryan is a bloody nice bloke. I had the Valla feature as well as six individual features lined up with him. Maybe we'll see them in VWMA now 🙂 I'm sure he'll be fine. Primedia is huge and they can always use good editors in any of their mags (none as cool as Trends though!)
