I have only ever seen a couple of these around, they look pretty cool (in an ugly sort of way). Who's got one? Can you post some pics?
And
Why do you love your thing?

ps.
As I am an 'Adams' I too would like to own a Thing one day...

I've wanted a 'Thing' (actual VW one) for years now but know I'll never get one. Are there many in Aust?

I used to stir my missus up when she was in the insurance business, and tell her that when I buy my VW Thing I am going to go to the counter and say 'Hi, I want to insure my Thing', and wait for the looks....

Sigh, but it'll never happen.....

I thought I saw 2 at the Byron Bugfest. Or was the mixture of heat and grog playing games on me?

The RHD type 182 was made for the UK and was called the "TREKKA" over there... 400 RHD 182s were made..

Lee

Photo is of an Australian designed & made "Country Buggy"
Two of these were sent to Volkswagenwerk in Germany and within 2 years- the type 181 & 182 appeared...
A coincidence ??

I'm not worried - I though that's the way it was written for my type of reply. I rushed it because I though someone would be writing the exact same as I was.

I've seen two of these for sale in Perth (182's that is), I believe we probably have a handful of them due to our vicinity to Bali and Indonesia, who have heaps apparently.

I read where they were designed for the military..
so they weren't Made to a price...

I thought they would have been 4wd if they were designed for the military... But I was wrong...
there was a market for a 2wd jeep like vehicle...
as the German Army was supplied with 2000 type 181s in 1969-70. and they were also used in the Belgian & Dutch armies..

and there was a market in Australia... So Why didn't We get them too.... they were still made until 1980.....

Production finished in Germany in 1978 and was restarted in Mexico... before that CKD kits were assembled in mexico.. the kombi reduction boxes were replaced by semi trailing arms with CV Joints - the IRS rear end...
Production finished in 1980...
Between 1978 and 1980 about 6500 Mexican ckd kits were assembled in Indonesia...
A total of 90,785 type 181-182s were made...

A remarkable vehicle....

91,000 - so they are only about as rare as a split window beetle then ?

🙂

Except on average only half the age, so thence easier to find.
