Hi all,
My '60 bug has a section of extra trim on the drivers side (missing off the other side) that I thought, until now, was just add-on by a previous owner. However while flicking through other posts I saw a '62 bug with a similar flash and want to know about them. For example:
- are they original from the factory? Certain models?
- mine is made of 'double' rubber striping, is this what they should be? Where would I get more of this to finish the other side?
Pics below - my '60 (yellow), and the '62 I saw in another post. Thanks.
...and the '62 flash...
can u take more pics of ur flash looks interesting
looks like an aftermarket strip can you take some close up pics.
OK, see what I can do tomorrow.
Uhhh.... Hmm.
THE LOWEST WITH THE MOSTEST BLING BLING WINS!!
As far as I know they were an Aussie thing only...
whether installed by the Dealer or factory I'm not sure....
I haven't seen any overseas in VW Books..
You can make them from old chrome strips off the same model car...
ie.. early thick chrome strips or late thin aluminium strips.....
they were common on late 50s early 60s beetles...
the rubber stick on type wasn't around in the 1950s & 60s...
The chrome strip type does look original...
the rubber one doesn't... but who knows...??
You can buy the rubber strip from Auto One etc... whether You can actually match the rubber strip is another matter....
with the Chromed strips [Some are stainless steel] You need to drill lots of holes... and thats something I don't like to do...
I told My Son to fill the holes in the bonnet in, as I had bent the aluminium strip taking it off... but My Son thought I wanted all the holes filled in - So all My Aluminium strip holes are Now brazed up.... and I don't like the idea of drilling all those holes again...

The flash trim kit was fitted by the dealers and they where made buy a company call Tilly.
As far as I know they made the trim for other cars as well.

I think you'll find that a previous owner of your car has in fact created their own flash design using a modern aftermarket body moulding that can be bought from auto accessory shops. They didn't have that stuff when your car was made.
Do a forum search on "flash" and you'll see where your previous owner was coming from. There are several styles and yes they were an Australia only accessory.
hehe.. i was bored...
also wanted to know what one would look like on my car..
yay or nay?
OK, here is a bunch oh photos showing what I have on my '60. Please excuse me for not being a bit more forthcoming, but the car is in storage on the other side of town and I don't see it too much, hence the 'stop start' comments. Check this out:
Here is the drivers side of the bug......you will see from later photos that these are not adhesive stripes, they are actually affixed through holes in the door. I believe they are chrome with a rubber insert.
Closeup of the base of the 'flash'
The 'merge' on the door
The 'front', forward of door. note the hole at the bottom, and see what is in the same spot on the other side...
Passenger side - front
Passenger door....note the holes for trim...
Passenger, behind the door....

This is the badge that is on the passenger side, forward of the door. There are two matching holes on the drivers side. Anyone got any ideas? Is it original?
While I'm here, can anyone tell me about these holes near the headlights?
It is my guess that your car used to have a 'flash' kit original on it and it had been removed at some stage before you owned it and the holes covered up with the stick on type strips. They look like chrome, but they are rubber stick on with a plastic chrome look edge.
With the holes near the headlights. Your car originally had semaphore indicators on the centre pillar and when they stopped working one of the previous owners may have put aftermarket trailer type indicators near the headlights for a while.
I think that badge is about as genuine as the flash kit. Someone has done a lot of "home renovations" on that bug for sure. Any bailing twine? 🙂
The plot thickens. Just wonder about the double row of holes. I reckon it's been in a drive-by.
Certainly looks like late model after market side strips
Not the same as early VW but different for sure.
Looks like some one stole the origionals BUGGAR .
LMAO brad, you bought tears to my eyes
So what you're all saying is that there's no problem with me adding to the 'uniqueness' of this bug by whacking in, say:
- Kombi 2L motor
- Notch bonnet
- Ghia tail lights
- Manx Rear wheels
- Fridolin sliding doors, and
- a large number '53' on the doors
'cos the beetle will still remain the same quality...hehe
Oh well, you never know what you have till you ask!
Thanks all for your time, have a great night
