I have been using an a frame to tow a bug in the uk. Which is a little bit of a grey area but ok if the car has broken down or is not full weight so it is an unlaided trailer or something. Is this the same in OZ and where can I buy one?

No longer legal here.
Not as dodgy as a rope though.

Used to be ok to use a stiff bar to tow a dead car, the NRMA used to do it
for you.

You can actually use an a-frame to tow a car that weighs less than 750kg, but it has to be a rigid frame with up and down pivoting allowed. I used one to tow my buggy and it's totally rigid and I take the front wheels off and put them in the back to lighten the front end. Works like a treat and meets regulations here in Qld and Tassie, and appearantly in NSW and Victoria too.

pod i`ve got to finish this thing one day

So far as I know, there are no one making these towing frames in Australia.
Someone had an imported one for sale on here ages ago...
I was hoping to make one the same....
The legalities are - the blinkers and tail/stop lamps have to work... so a trailer plug & socket must be used...
No one needs to be in the car as it just follows the towing vehicle... and it does have to be registered....

The country NRMA people just use a single bar which attaches to the front towing hook and the other end goes onto a tow bar... Some one must be in the car in this instance using the blinkers etc and steering....
Car must be registered naturally and licenced driver behind the wheel... the solid bar stops the towed vehicle from banging into the rear of the towing car...

I prefer the other "A" frame method of towing a beetle with no one in it.... At least if You had one... chances are You would never need to use it.... thats great insurance in itself...

Hey, Im bumping up this quite aged post because I am interested in putting together one of these A-Frames for my Buggy... thinking of doing a Trip along the east coast and would love to take the buggy with us... too much weight in a tandem Trailer...
Seen a few around towing Suzie's and I am guessing the same would work for the manx with it's linkpin front end the steering should just follow the lead car... I have an Extreemly solid front bar, SO a mod to this so I can shackle on an A-Frame... what do you all think...

Anyone got one of these working... Got some Photos...???

QLD rego so I should be Sweet...

Funny I just deleted the pic the other day, the a frame I used makes no difference if its link or ball, attaches under the front beam, with a large bolt and pin. The car just follows you. Its really strange as you don't think it will work. But it does. perfect for a buggy. loads of people use them in the UK. They are cheap too 150 bucks. You forget it is there in the end. Great fun. U2U me if you want some pics
