I paid $80 to get a tank cover for my bike from the US sent by UPS. it didn't worry me to much cause even with this cost it was still a lot cheaper than I could get it here. I have heard that there are some unscrupulous PPL that use postage costs as an excuse to bump up the total cost though!

well im suss cos i asked him to give me a receipt for the shipping costs and he said thats not possible
If your worried about it bail out! He should have stated the shipping arrangements before hand, and I always ask what the shipping cost will be before the auction ends, that way I know what Im up for before I bid. there is a dispute facility, you could try that first!

I had my footware sent from Japan and the postage was about US$20.
The package weighed about 2 kg and the size of the box used was 220 x 310 x 145 (mm).
I think the seller wants to charge you not only for shipping but also his/her HANDLING the package to send up. So I gather for that handling part, the seller is not able to issue a receipt. 🙂 The Post Office in Japan does issue receipts for any postage, starting from 1 yen and onwards.
Also, FedEx, or something similar, is available at local convenience stores all over Japan for International Shipping. So the seller's story is pretty bogus, I'd say.

We had this happen to us a while ago. An object we won ost $8.00, but shipping charges cost us $70.00, when he stated it (on his front pages) was only $10.00. We said thatw as crap.
We then asked for size and weight, and for him to justify any extra above this...such as package costs. Person then removed item and gave us neg feedback. We then went to ebay to make a complaint...found guy had done it to other aussies....and he was then asked to justify them all.
Ebay apparently came down heavy, but some felt it was not heavy enough. One person set up a web pages to tell their story, and then guy seller involved changes his name....feedback followed....as well as link to buyers web page.

Yes there are a lot of people trying to make money from Postage & HANDLING .....
I always ask for shipping charges...
there are a lot of nice people on ebay who wrap the goods
very well and charge nothing for the handling....
Thats who I buy from.....

Many of the professional JOEBLOWAUCTIONS always charge excessive handling charges....
