Im thinking of buying 56Ovaltines baja and just wanted to know how damaging wet weather is to the engine, being exposed and all... Anything else I should know (eg mileage economy)?
THANKS *huggles*

I've had no dramas. Just when I park it in the rain I put plastic bags over the carbies. Fuel lines and the belt need more regular checking because they're exposed to the sun and weather.

never had a problemo and i never put anything over anything. if u start it in the rain sometimes the points have a bit of moisture on them and it will be rough for a wee bit and then itl come good.

you can get little covers for the 009 dissy. But I have never had them cause I haven't needed them. I also ziptie the leads to the cap, this is so I don't loose them at high speed but it may help with water. Just make sure you use good leads with the cover over the plug holes or air gets out and water gets in......
my 009 has one of those little black plastic things that sit over the points and under the rotor button but it doesnt stop the rain getting in.

the one I was thinking about is a cover that goes over the hole dissy. they come in different colors and are made of rubber..... I will look for a link or somethin
im not sure i know what youre talking about moose yeah a link would be cool.
E: paint your engine (the bits u can paint) in some black killrust paint (like the generator and stuff) to make it look nice and then u wont be bothered by rust discolouration and stuff like me. my engine is actually pretty clean but because it has faded and cracking paint it looks untidy.
unless u are in a cyclone rain generally doesnt get into your carbies little hidey hole under the rear section of the kit much (unless u dont have this rear section). its not really a drama. even stock bugs get water in their engine bays when it rains cause of the vents.

I never had a problem when I had my baja - but then it doesnt rain much in WA !!!
powdercoating is fantastic when it comes to engine tinware, if you want to keep it lookin schmick. Hammerite paint is also pretty tough too, and doesnt require alot in the way of surface prep.
so does that just go over your whole dissy and u plug the leads in through the lead holes in the cover? the pic is a bit small. interesting idea though.

yeah ....pretty much, I have never used them myself but I know people who have. the distributor can still breathe though the holes in the bottom so it doesn't sweat.
I just use silicon spray on mine
The only problem I have had is that the chrome engine tin goes rusty faster..
Don't let perceived engine problems stop you getting a Baja...
There are No problems with them...
I hate to admit it, but man, I think you're right....
for the money 56 is asking you would be hard pushed to get a baja in half as good condition, well worth the money i think. u could hsop around andget one cheaper but to get it to the same sort of condition will cost you a fair bit more... i paid 500 for mine and so fair it into me for 1500 a with a fair bit more to go and i am a spray painter so the paint job was for the cost of the paints making it much cheaper u knows.....
go on buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you knows ya wanna!!!!!!!!!!!!
steff............................................
Life with out a v-dub is no life at all!!!!!
yep just buy it! it be the first step to getting into a buggy!!! i've had bugger all trouble with water as long as your a bit smart about how you treat it, rain no worries at all, water flowing over the the tub into a buggy can get interesting though!!!!!
Sometimes driving in Wes's backyard gets a little wet...
Thanks for the swift replies. I'm fairly sure Im going to grab it, as long as there isnt any major difficulties engine and body wise. Checking it out this Sunday...and those clips sound interesting
