Hi Doug,

Hope you had a great festive season! Ours was fairly quiet - which makes a nice change!

The last time I mentioned the EFI system on here it was up and running on my floorpan - but the rest of the car needed some serious attention before it could be driven. I still have plans to convert the ignition system to a crank fired system (to remove the need for a distributor and it's associated problems (ie: water in the cap when crossing deep creeks, and the fact that it is in the way of where I want to mount my Air Conditioning compressor). I am still researching these mods at the moment.

It has also come to my attention that the (40hp) swing axel gearboxes are not up to the task when put behind a large engine and attached to big off-road wheels. My brother has just replaced his 8th g/box in his Baja.... We are now looking at converting the s/axel pan to IRS and running a Kombi box for better gearing and extra strength. The pan has just been stripped back to bare again (it was partly re-assembled) and will be shipped off to the workshop that is doing the conversion in a day or two, then I can start putting it all back together again :thumb These mods also require me to fit a lift kit to the car and the air conditioner condensor is going to be mounted where I had the surge tank for the EFI, so that will all have to be moved and re-mounted elsewhere... Does the saying one step forward, two steps back ring a bell? 😉

I have set myself a time limit to finish this car (or at least get it registered) - Easter. It's not going to be easy as I am also trying to find a job in IT at the same time and should this occour, then spare time will be at a premium. Heres hoping....

Enough about my system/car/life, hows your planned system coming along? What ECU have you decided on? How did the fuel rails turn out? Got pics?

Talk to you soon!

Wow, really sounds like a full nuts and bolts rebuild of the car !

Yes, 40hp swingaxle boxes are not up to rough off road usage..... go the kombi box and IRS. Are you converting to kombi cv's as well, or are you getting custom driveshafts made up ? (ie kombi spline one end, beetle the other, which I believe is the easiest way to do it ?).

As for my car...... and my EFI system....... well I talked about it alot ! but absolutely nothing has happened. My personal life hasnt allowed for many $$ to be spent, hence all I've done is procrastinated and thought about what to do next.

I thought quite a bit about getting rid of the 73 and chasing a baja - I might still do this, I dont know.

It just doesnt seem like I'm in a position to be able to do anything major to my car. Ideally, I'd like to get a dodgy 1600tp and bench mount it to develop a system, iron out the bugs (no pun intended !) and then mount it all into the L bug in one foul swoop. I guess its still on the cards, its only a matter of getting the bits and going from there.

Hence I'm living my efi / aircon VW dreams through your project currently !!!

Hopefully, when things quieten down at home, I can get back into it.

I have the plan in my head...... just no parts in my hands 🙂

Take it easy !

...sounds like you are planning on doing what I have done - Find a running (but sad) 1600tp, mount it to a bench (or in my case the almost complete floor pan) and fit the EFI and A/C. That way you don't have to take a registered and running car off the road of any period of time.

My driveshafts will be Kombi one end and beetle the other - seams like the easiest way to do it...and it works.

I came to the realisation yesterday, once I had my floorpan stripped down, that there is not a single nut/bolt/clip/fastner that I have not removed - even the factory wiring loom has been removed - the body is off to the bead blasters early next week - I just have to finish a couple of welds before we load it onto the trailer....

I'll try to put a couple of pics up in the members vehicles section of the forum once I have the pan and body back from their little 'trips' - then I will update my website....hmmmm, any wonder things move so slowly around here - I spend too much time on the computer! :O

Whilst I am thinking about it (and I probably should post this question in the tech mods section too), does anyone know of a 4 cylinder vehicle (any brand) that uses coilpacks instead of a distributor? Any info would be appreciated as I will have a look at each of them to detirmine which one(s) will connect to my system will the minimum of hassle.

Cheers

Erm, I think the EJXX series motors used coilpacks, and if not them, then the SR20 nissan motors use them too.

Hmmmm - I think just find your local rice wrecker and ask the question.

What are you going to do in terms of a pickup for the trigger ?

I'm going to have a close look at how the various factory cars set theirs up first - I notice that there is quite a bit of info in the Kalmaker website regarding this style of ignition trigger - I believe that some of the Commodores use a crank fire system - but don't quote me on that one yet....

Late model versions of the little Russian 4X4 Lada Nivas run crank fired ignition also.

...now thats an interesting thing to know - there just happens to be a workshop that specialises in Nivas a few doors down from my brothers workshop (I bet hes got his work cut out for him!). I will wander past next time I down that way and ask a few questions..... Thanks!
