Any leads or suggestions on components to build up am EFI type 1. Cost effective throttle bodies, manifolds, ecu etc., New or second hand.

Thanx

Talk to Ratty63 on here - he built the most budget of budget EFI systems, basically using Camira gear, single throttle body with modified inlet manifold end castings.

The only way you could do it cheaper would be to install all the camira gear and then thake it somewhere with Kalmaker software to have the chip in your car tuned, and a memcal burned for it.

Ratty63 shelled out about $1100 up front for the modified, rebuilt ECU with the real time conversion that allows you to tune it from a laptop.

He also has a web paage - http://rosscosvwprojects.50megs.com/ its well worth a look

yeah the Camira gear is a good way to go - get the wiring harness, TB, sensors and computer from the unleaded multi-point injected Camiras JD series, I think??? (or 1.8-litre Aussie engined Nissan Pulsars) then go see Daniel at 'Chipmaster' over there in Perth. You will also need a bit of machining/adapting to make the Camira distributor fit the VW case - but it;s not difficult, apparently. Also need to adapt TB to VW manifold and change teh coolant temp sesnor for a Porsche one... little things like that...

I want to do that in the near future - but I'll get someone closer to tune it!!

Make sure you check out the page link suggested above

Hi all!

Don't often come in this section of the forum (trying to save money!) 😀

As Doug mentioned above, I have set up an EFI system (engine management system actually) from scratch using parts from a Camira (JE model), and a Delco ECU with a real time board installed in it (which allows me to connect a laptop and tune/observe the EFI system whilst the car is running)...its a great system and very flexible. I have documented the build up on my web site. Feel free to have a look and ask any questions that you may have - perhaps even add the questions to the end of the EFI thread that is on here so that everyone can benifit from the knowledge gained.

Of course, the Delco/Camira set up is not the only way to do it. If you want to keep it as simple as possible (and therefore less expensive) you might consider using one of the many different ECU's available on the market. Most of them are injector controllers only (ie: they don't control spark timing). The most simple of these are known as screwdriver tune - meaning that you can tune them with a screwdriver:duh....I would, however recommend that you look at the best ECU you can afford as the added features are well worth having. At a minimum look for something that uses an Oxygen sensor in the exhaust to give the ECU some feedback as to how well the engine is tuned. This is the sort of technology that is used on every production car...and its not that difficult/expensive to set up either.

Good luck, and let us all know how you go!

Oh yeah, whilst I am at it, I should mention that if you decide to go with the Delco/Camira system, make sure that you get the wiring loom from a JE Camira. Other parts, such as the dizzy, sensors, and TB are interchangeable between the N13 Pulsar/Astra, but Nissan, in their wisdom, made the entire car with only one wiring loom! So this means that if you were to use a Pulsar loom rather than a Camira loom you would have to remove the wiring for everything from the headlights, horn, dashboard, to the taillights and even the interior light before you could start to use what was left - way too hard when the Camira loom comes very close to fitting the VW engine with very little modification! Keep in mind also that the Pulsar/Astra also came out in a Single point injection model too - still some useful parts but I would keep looking for a multi point model....

Sensors from the VN and VP Commodores (and same model Toyota Lexans) will also be the same as the Camira, but obviously the dissy and wiring loom will be different....

Thanks guys - I've got some homework to do! Also onto a south african supplier that has an aftermarket ECU with 02 feedback for about $400. see <www.gotech.co.za>

You've hit the nail right on the head there Doug! The section regarding the EFI is up-to-date, but I still have further plans. Is there any info you would particularly like to see regarding the EFI? Just let me know and I will add it in.

Quick update on my car (sorry, I know that its not related to this thread): I have just had the pan converted to IRS (so the test engine had to be removed) and I am in the process of re-painting the pan and the IRS parts that will be going on to it. My Twin cab Kombi is about to be relieved of its 1600 gearbox so that it (the gearbox) can be fitted to the Baja pan. I am also in the process of trying to get the body of the Baja off to the bead blasters...its all taking way too long!

I will have a look at that link for the South African EFI system when I get a second (I'm supposed to be asleep, so that I can get up and be on the road to the Toowoomba Swap at 5am tomorrow!), but consider this - Australia is the centre of EFI development - most of the aftermarket EFI systems are made for and sold by Australian companies. Most of the EFI research is done right here....

...just re-read what VWCOOL wrote above and thought that I should add the following:

The Camira Dissy had to have the foot machined off the case. A simple job for someone with a lathe (took about 15 mins to do mine). The drive foot is exactly the same as the VW drive foot and the shaft length is exactly the same too, so once the outer case is machined down, it just drops in where the VW dissy once was.

There was a lot of argument as to where to take the engine temp reading from, some said from the oil, others said from the heads. I eventually went for the head temp reading - the same location as VW use (just beside the intake port) - see my website for my reasoning if you are interested. My point is, I priced a number of temp senders before choosing the original sender from the VW EFI (found on the type III's and IV's). It matched the temp v's resistance of the Camira sender (which is a water temp sensor) and was under $50 - the Porsche and Harley Davidson senders are over $100 each. So far it has worked perfectly and the ECU is happy with the readings it is recieving from this sensor.....

...Just thought you might like to know 🙂
