Team,
I was lurking on here the other week and there was a thread from someone who had found a splitty in the bush somewhere. He said that he may have to sell it on at a small profit as he couldnt afford to restore it properly. The "Splitty Mafia" immediately castigated him for daring to speak in such a manner - fancy making a profit from your good find!! Anyway, this got me to thinking - what would you do if you stumbled upon the find of the century (23 window barny, Heb, kublewagen with Hitlers skeleton in it etc etc) Knowing full well I couldnt afford the restoration that something like this deserves, I would sell it on to someone who could. Herein is the moral question - do you make a killing on your ultradesirable find, or make like a hippie and give it away in the quest for peace love and a never-ending bucket bong???
What would you do???
you wouldnt sell it on. if it was htat rare you would sell everything you could to get it going, or preserve it best you can so that it didnt deteriorate anymore, until you got the money together... well thats what i would do.😎
and i certainly wouldnt leave it lying in the yard under a tarp or tree, with out any attention.
but heres a story. i had a shetland cruiser and this bloke at the local tyre shop really wanted a cruiser but couldnt afford it or convince his wife that he could afford it. being next to my work i used to chat to these guys everyday. anyway when i decided to get another, rather than sell my shetland for market value, i went and gota trade value, then went back and offered it to this bloke. he was absolutely gobsmacked with joy. 3k saved and he could justify it to his mrs. i gotta say its good to think about those in your community whether it be bike or vw or what ever. it was happiness for me as i got my new cruiser and i got to see someone else get their dream come true also.
i dont believe in marking it up for the sake of what you would get out of it yourself. there is more than money in this world, or there is suppose to be. those that want to, can shoot me down for being open and honest about it. i dont care. or they can shame others into not considering it also. but at the end of the day not everything in life has to be about dollars. id rather save and enjoy a vw myself or if not at least pass it on with the opportunity of someone else saving itand enjoying it. :kiss 😎 :thumb
imust be the hippy... on the inside maybe and replace the bong with vodka... :thumb

Simply Cruzin'...
Give it away and watch it's restoration
Money is tight these days.......... I'd sell it for what it's worth.
Look at it this way..... if you found a car that someone was selling and it was a gem of a car and the price they where asking was really cheap would you tell them they are ripping themselves off and offer them more money???? No Way!!
Make a killing!! I don't care if someone doesn't eat for a year thats thier problem I want thier money gotta have money ,show me the money
:P
Keeping it real !
I'd trade it in for a back walk from a huge shemale followed by lashings of whipped cream and chocolate sauce.
Whoops. Wrong forum.
There's nothing wrong with making a profit. However, if it's a really gouging profit (ie it was given to you because you were going to do it up) you need a good whipping. See above.

If you bought a house dirt cheap during a slump then wanted to move during a bubble would you sell it for no capital gain? No you sell for a fair price.
and fund a resto for myself , i have had a few splits that i found around here in the country and sold them cheap to people that were gunna keep them for ever type thing ,only to find they took them to the big smoke and made a killing so no more of the nice guy pass on the karma for me
I would never have to worry about being in that position, I am never lucky enough to find anything rare. I am usually the sucker on the other end that pays the high inflated price
🤘
That was me in the split under a tree thread, I had only envisage a small mark up, I was actually thinking a carton of beer for my troubles. I would much prefer to see the resto and maybe get a drive in the future then let it rot, just because I could not afford it. Then there were some offers made via u2u and I was surprised what some people were prepared to pay. It still sits under the tree, less than 100m from where I do salinity research.
Reminds me I need to talk to the farmer agian.

It's up to the person who owns it, it's theirs right? Good on 'em if they can make a buck, People should work hard for what they want to buy.
Man and i work hard...twoguns, can i be second in line?
if one of us found it no doubt we would know what it was worth to us. yes everyone has the right to sell what they own at what ever price they think is appropriate. it is what someone is willing to pay and the more they pay the more chance there is of it surviving so all i can say is do the research and ask top dollar. it benefits us all at the end of the day doesnt it? if it was truly a rare find then hope for the vw history you know it is going to a good home .......... that is peace love and mung beans dude........
beetles, buses and buggies......the garden gnomes are breeding
in my business I can often get given a couple of cars a week... most are crap and suitable for scrap and crushing, but every so often you get a good one and for the most part I'll put them aside for a few weeks and normally offer them for sale at a price that's pretty close to what the scrap guys will pay me for the tow...
I figure, what goes around, comes around and if that car gets put back on the road, it's another customer that I've got out there...

I hate to admit it, but man, I think you're right....
I would organise an auction with all interested parties.
If i did not recieve the money i was after i would have it crushed right there infront of everyone and have it made into a small metal cube.
Then i would start the bidding on a rare genuine VW 23 window metal cube.
not really, but i do agree with HRMat and coopgirl.
some people are like slinky's
they have no useful purpose
but they are fun to watch
when you push them down the stairs
The secret is, never tell anyone what you paid unless you intend to keep it.
What they don't know, won't hurt them.
Well my friends are gone & my hair is grey, I ache in the places where I used to play.
Honestly, I'm not sure what I would do..
my general rule of thumb is as follows:
if given free, and nothing spent, then nothing asked....just make sure it goes to someone who will actually fix up and drive it
if given free, and resto started, what I have spent to date. and only that..again, make sure it goes to good home.
If I purchased it, what I paid to date...and again, make sure it is offered to good home first
BUT: If reason I can't afford it because I alreaady ahve heaps of resto on the floor, then ask trade price, take off what has been spent to date, then halve it....and again, offer to go home.
That way we all win, I get extra money for the other restos, they person buying gets to keep some money for the restos. And still got a good bargin to boot.
so...if I knew where there was a splitty panel van, rust repairs done, primed & ready for painting, all parts there, and I can't afford it, is it enough of a bargin I should pass it on?? it's about $2K, and i think it's a bargin, what about u guys??
dubless. 🥲
🥷 And who the helled parked the Mitsubishi "Prancer" under my house??? 🥷
Someone gives someone else a car with the previso that they do the car up. They where told that if they wheren't going to fix it for themselves could the original owner have the rims back. This person gets the car home and the first thing they sell are the rims and eventually they sell the whole car.
The car was given to a person they knew and thought to be a trustworthy person and a friend.
If you 'find' a car for next to nothing then sure, sell it for as much as someone is willing to pay, BUT, when a friend offers you a car for free and you say you will do it up then either do the car up or pass it on to someone else who is going to fix it up.
if i was flush with cash trees i'd give the thing away if i got it for free or sell it at what it cost me... the reality is that we live in a materialistic society and dollars talk... im not going to give away $6k worth of bus just to see the next buyer with more brains then me sell it for a mint.... if i found a buyer i trusted and liked, someone who would in this case that we are talking vw's restore the bus for their pleasure and pride, i would cut them a deal, but we all need money to live...
everything dies baby, thats a fact..
maybe everything that dies one day comes back..
put your make up on and your hair up pretty..
and meet me tonight in Atlantic city..

thats a rough thing to do, obviously wont be trusted again.

I'll take the panel, any pics? Location?
if i had found it, i would keep it... dont pass up on something now that you may want to do later, be prepared for when you want to do it. but then again, mum doesnt call me a bowerbird for nothing...
i would definitely keep it, at least for a while. you never know when you might come across some money and have the time for a resto. if in a few years it doesnt eventuate, then pass it on. But dont pass it on to someone you dont trust to do a resto on it, pass it on to someone thats going to make it beautiful AND keep it.
its a rare find, and it is never wise to pass up on a rare find.
in the beginning, the universe was created.
this made alot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.
If you can't restore it, let someone else who can,
if it's free but you can't keep it, give it to someone who can.
Otherwise it's just being selfish and silly.
As for selling on. We live in a capitalist society, I don't really like it, but that's life.
coop girl, that is bad...suxs the maximum
byron, my secret. spoke with owner, and they are gonna let me save my dollars....so not letting anyone else know until i have it in my garage.
sorry, but if i decide i can't get it, or life gets int he way, i promise to let u have it next (see here, PROMISE...) and i keep my word. SO DON'T WORRY ALRIGHT. YOU will have first option after me.
cheers
