This is for all those people out there with lowered type 3's.
Swapping my fasty back to original 4 stud pattern after a stint with illegally drilled Porsche pattern. The car has been lowered and had BBS 17x7 mags with Pirelli 195x45 tyres on the front, and 205x50 on the rear. The wheels and tyres fitted but there was some rubbing.
I have just bought some 15 x5.5 empi 8's and I am wondering what size tyre I should use on the front and back?
Any ideas? What does everyone else use?
Thanks,
pat
um i run empi eights on a super. I can't comment on clearance, but will on tire size.
I run 195/60r15 on the front and 205/60r15 on the rear. Now the empi 5.5 inch width is a little narrower than the steel 5.5 inch wheels i had on before, so i find the rear 205's are a little balloned on the back and you do get tire squirm from them when pushing hard. but the 195's sit very nicely and also can get them in some decent styles( i used to run falken st115's but now run bridgestone gIII)
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!
Go hard or go home!!!!
mmm ...so u think that 205/60r15 won't rub, remembering that my car gas been lowered?
like i said i can't comment on tire rubbing as i run this combo on a L bug. I was commenting on tire sizes that fit the empi 8's niceley. Thet 5.5 inch rims are the narrowest allowable for a 205/60 tire. and i find that they squirm alot.

Bix,
I know urs is a bug, but is it lowered or standard height?
Pat
hey Pat..where did you go for the empis and what did they cost?
lowred 2 inches. they site very niceley on the bug, which has 10mm spacers in front guards and std rears.

Pat, Ive got 185/55 Pirelli's on the back and the ol' 135 Michie's on he front. My car is lowered a fair bit and doesnt seem to suffer from any tyre scrub.Ive got Fuchs on at the moment though and I dont know if the they have a different offset to the Empi's....

Is your Notch IRS?? My Notch will be pretty low and on BRM's and the best i can see is 175/55's. Dont want to run 135's etc . Famous last words , LOL

Just a quick inquiry. Will you be including your Type 3's in the Registry? It would be especially nice if you can include a photo.
Thanks.

My '73 wagon has 195/70's on std rims. Not lowered, no rubbing. Tyres look way to wide for IMO.
Andy, what shop agreed to fit 195s on standard 4.5" rims? I am suprised they have not popped out of the rim.
I am running 195/50-15 all'round on 5.5" repro 2.0 Fuchs (the 4 bolt ones) and my 71 Notch is lowered. I used to run stock tyre/wheel combo and I used to rub on the front heavily short of full lock, it used to annoy me no end. when I put the 195/50s on the fuchs and installed them, I have no rubbing whatsoever, it is nice being able to get full lock on the wheel. I am not sure what offset the 8-spoke has but that is something you need to consider when trying to eliminate rubbing. the Fuchs that I am running are not too far from the stock offset. Check this page out for a better explanation. It also has a list of wheels vs tyres that people have tried ont heir Typo3s

VW no more... sigh.... well, at least it's a cousin
I have no idea, tyres came with the wagon. I agree not a choice I would have made, and I have been waiting for them to roll off, but have not yet, even though I've tried!!
