To Whom it may concern:

DNVK would like to sponsor our own category at this years VW Nationals. We would supply our own trophy and our own judging committee. We would like to present the trophy to the winning car during the award ceremony at the end of the show. Not sure who to speak to so if one of the organisers can reply here or contact me at dnvk@hotmail.com.

regards

sam

A rat category kinda goes against the idea of rats that they subvert the show thing.

You could only really judge it on a subjective basis of cool.

I don't see rats that way. You could easily judge a rat cat, Even if it is with cool .. i mean most judging is pretty wanky anyway, right?

Good idea in principle...however you need some firm guidelines as to what constitutes a rat.

is it faded paint, unrestored, dented, rusted, interior or all the above.

"Good idea in principle...however you need some firm guidelines as to what constitutes a rat. is it faded paint, unrestored, dented, rusted, interior or all the above. "

i would say all of the above. listen im not here to create a stir, just hav some fun, so dont take it too seriously. look at it my way...

the winner would be the coolest non-show car there, i think thats pretty good guidlines, and im sure its something my judging panel will easily agree upon. there is no politics here, just a few of us in the klub who want to giv a trophy to a sweet rat looker. i would also want to include cars in the car park. it wouldnt be like, he has the most rust, so he wins or anything, it would just be the overall look of the car. u understand wat i mean right?
in the past years ive seen a few rat lookers in the show and in the car park, but wat category would they have entered and competed in? the only one i can think of is Best unfinished project? i doubt they would have any chance at winning. That airbagged beetle won last year and wats unfinished about that? its not registered?
this wouldnt even be official. no need to enter the car urself, we would merely go around, speak to the owner telling them they r in the running for "DNVK's Choice" and at the end of the show we would present them with our own trophy.
its just for laugh guys. if u wanna get serious then forget it, i dont care.

the only issue is i can see that maybe this would upset the organisers of the nationals, maybe it would be seen as undermining their show or watever, and i know alot of organising and tradition goes into the show. that why im asking here first, asking permission if u like.
im not here to step on toes, but i would like to do something a little different this year. either way, i put it up here to hear ur feedback so let me know wat u think, its all good.

Yep...you really do need to define what a rat is....that ratstar rod, as cool as it is, doesn't look like a rat to me...I guess it doesn't have the chromes engine and stuff other rods have?

How do you go with modifications on a rat...? What's the norm in the car world?

ill try to clarify wat is meant by all this.
lets forget the "wat is a rat?" issue.
this is a trophy for wat we as a club feel is the coolest non-show car on the day.
some examples could be:
faded original paint cars which r more on the tatty side, slammed or sumthing,
maybe a matt black type 3 wagon,
a primered bus with no windows,
or even a yellow oval with shitty orginal panels, chalked on whitewalls and taxi stripes?
do u get wat im saying? something cool which catches our eye but wouldnt make it in any of the official categories. thats the best way i can describe it.
if u dont get it u dont get it.

Try giving Dave a call Sam....you might get in touch with him sooner to put the wheels in motion. Try him at Vintage.

It might be too late though, as stuff would no doubt be already printed up etc etc.

A great initiative though all the same, and if done right, gives the opportunity for everyone to win something.

Goodness yes it is very close to the day...this is stuff that needs to be done months before so that people are aware.....and organises can include the group..

Dave is the one running with it all...he's been flat chat I'm sure...it's a big job... Maybe it's one that needs to be planned well for the next Nat's

I know down here in Melb...we are planning to include a section for rat's in our judging...but yes...how to define the group...

p.s. silver.....did you stay plugged into that power point all night or just to show the crown off in it's full luminated glory??? 😀

months of planning!!! i dont see why it needs any planning at all, especially from dave, im sure he has enuff on his plate as it is.

i will b in charge of it. from organising the judging committee, to talking to the owners, to supplying and presenting the trophy. its all taken care of. and i definetly wont be competing in it in case thats wat u think im doing it for.

i dont mind if no one is aware of it on the day or not, its more like a boobie prize. u dont expect to win anything, and then u find out u hav won a prize in this random category no one knew about. its just abit of fun.

i was thinkning of just doing this on the day for a laugh but i thought it wouldnt go down so well if i didnt ask for permission first, i also wanted to see wat others thought of the idea. i cant call dave during the day, at uni, but i know he comes on here, so dave i welcome ur feedback, if i can do it, great, if u dont want me to, fine, no harm done. its as easy as that.

and who knows, maybe it will go down well enuff that next year the nationals will hold their own category where these types of cars r welcome. its just an idea...

A lucky door prize... Just do it, if you want to.

I might hand out a trophy or two on the day, too... like Best Tits Award... or even better, best Vee Dub Bonnet. All judged by me, of course...

I know you have decieded not to call it a RAT trophy,

I think a few people on here are a bit confused as to what a RAT is.
I thought it was as found , ie not restored, but lowered with a big engine, that is what all the mags call a rat, but I have seen people just calling a shitty car a rat.
It is just a shitty car if it isnt lowered and more important has a worked motor.

Cheers
Dave

I'd be curious as the what the response will be to having another club sponsor a trophy.

No slight to Club VeeDub but a "Nationals" isn't really a club thing. In no other scene does one club run a "Nationals" event.

For example a rod & kustom show/weekender Coopgirl and I recently attended there were numerous trophies sponsored by and judged by clubs (with their own criteria). Teh organisers of course had the top 6, top kustom and top ratster - all picked the best way possible, by popular choice.

Hell, even the lunches and breakfasts (provided) were handled by a different club each time.

Club VeeDub have done a great job but isn't the scene really big enough now to have a true "Nationals"?
