Oh and if I sold my single port 1500 motor, which is in pretty good condition how much would I get for it?

Thanks 🙂

Well, that's up to you, if you enjoy doing the work yourself and have the skills/tools go for it and do it yourself. Helps you to learn a lot about your motor and appreciate it more when it's going.
You also have the option to re-use parts that are still servicable and save money, depending on what's wrong with your current motor.

Cost wise a complete new motor probably is hard to beat compared to a full re-build on an old motor becuse there is no additional strip down/machining/re-assembly costs.

I recently did as much of the work I could myself on a type 4 motor, and sent it out for machining and assembly to long block stage. I enjoyed the work and know my motor inside and out now.

Prices to sell a used motor fluctuate a lot, so no idea.

...and also your skill/willingness to fix a problem resulting from your own rebuild vs having the support of a business if there is a problem.

Remember though this support would be for the long block itself, not the fact that you seized the crank as a result of forgetting to fill it with oil etc (I know this sounds stupid but there are people out there who would try to claim a refund for their own stupidity/carelessness). I'll stop ranting now 🙂

If you're talking about that new brazilian longblock, i'd reckon rebuilding one from original german parts is better.

Like others have said it's satisfying building your own engine, and that way you also know it was done right. I recommend the book "how to rebuild aircooled volkswagen engines" by tom wilson. This guided me through my first rebuild.

?? If you buy new bearings, P/C sets, heads etc whether from VW or resellers most if it will come from Brazil anyway....... Same parts as a new Factory VW motor or not???
(for a stock re-build).

Well i don't have that much money as I am working from a budget. I heard that the single port 1500 motors are pretty gutless and I would like a little more power 😀 Are motors built from mexico ok? I have heard stories ect

Too bad you have a budget. The Subaru WRX motors fitted in the bugs make them get up and dance well

Foxy,

in my head I have you pictured like Foxy Cleopatra from Austin Powers Goldmember. In response to ppl asking whether you would build the motor urself I just had a vision of this chick with a big afro, stillettos and long hot pink fingernails building this motor. I obviously have way too much time on my hands !!!!

For all I know you could be a 6ft tall and 5ft wide bloke with a beard and a beer gut ?

what sort of budget did u have in mind...

u might fidn someone here has a good 1600 motor that just need gaskets in ur range...u never know ur luck in the big city..

i heard that it's the 1200 and 1300 that are gutless, but the 1500 & 1600 are ok.

also, u have to take into account what ur running off it...

like stereo, air con, electic windows, fridge freezers...all takes power..
dubless. 🥲

The brazilian pistons, heads are fine. The cranks arent so great, they are cast, wheras the german ones were forged. I'd prefer german rods, rockers, pushrods, etc too.

As a guide it cost me 1700 to rebuild mine myself with rebuilt heads, new P&C's, cam, lifters etc.
