Now to explain the subject
6 people will be leaving Gladstone (central qld) Mothers Day morning in May to walk to entire way to Brisbane (550 ks approx) Not a relay !
They are doing this to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Actually the target is 100,000.00 bux to buy a family unit in Bribane for the families of a people receiving treatment, to stay in and be close. The Leukaemia Foundation is building a village and this is our way of helping to fund it. We have called it the Gladstone and District Walk of Hope. The team is basically doing a marathon everyday for 13 days.
There is a few reasons for this post
To make as many people as possible aware of this fantastic event.
If nothing else give them a "toot"if you see them on the side of the road as you are driving along the Bruce Highway.
We hope to have all our costs covered before the walkers leave here.....by the way of donations and the like. One major one is the accommodation along the way for the 6 walkers 1 maybe 2 support and an Ambulance driver. Queensland Ambulance Service are one of our major supporters and 3 of the walkers are paramedics (could come in very handy) We are hoping to get a motel chain to help us out on that one.
With the Aussie Vee Dubbers being such a huge group from wide and varying backrounds I thought what better place to go and see what sort of "stuff" i could drum up. Maybe some of you could put me in touch with the right people or you could be the right one to say "Hey I work for ......Gatorade" and I can help to get you of this drink to help you along the way. Thats just an example of course but I am looking for a sports drink !
I am on the logistics committee so I am looking for any way possible to make this as easier task than it is going to be.
I am also the Treasurer for the Gladstone Branch of the Leukaemia Foundation and only joined the branch when like so many others I lost a very close family friend to this god awful disease.
I want to help make a difference to the lives of others who are fighting for their life... literally ! and if that means coming on to this forum and asking for help/suggestions well here I am.
I am definately not gong to get a job as a reporter cause this is all over the shop as you can see. if any of you want to u2u me with anything helpful I would really appreciate it.

I was going to do the walk as well but can't ge the time off work
But I have 6 days off during the walk so keep an eye out for the Inca Gold VW

I part-time teach about half way down yer trip
and the school is right on the highway and if we can stay in touch we may be able to get the kids out to cheer use all on.

entertaining too ,as the students learn German from VWskiland there and would love to see your dub as well as learn lots!!

Why dont we get the sponsors involved and name the unit the "pale bug unit" or ???

Am hoping to get plenty of Media attention
Hoping someone like Best Western comes on board for the accom.
If that is the case will be a hell of a lot cheaper. Only problem is that we will need around 8 beds per night so we know its a big ask for some places. The walkers are reluctant to go to someones house as good as it may sound to have a home cooked meal, but they would fell obliged to spend some time talking to the hosts and we think after walking 40ks in a day the last thing they will want to do is "chat"
We have a lot to sort out.
Tomorrow I start looking for a Motor home of some sort. has to have a toilet as the 2 women walking said they are NOT going to squat bedind trees for 2 weeks !!

Vern....find out who the marketing people are for Best Western or Flag etc...put a letter together explaining who you are..what you're doing...How they can be of help....say they will get some free plugs/signage...that there will be media attention...etc etc..Maybe free ads in the foundations newsletter...
Adidas and Nike are usually good at sponsoring if you need shoes, shorts n t-shirts.....or maybe your local sports store?
Try one of the campervan hire companies Britz, Maui....Apollo, Hertz, Kea...do same sort of letter

Have sent letters to Best Western and Flag i believe. The other 2 on the logistice commottee are covering that side of it. Local sports store has come on board with shorts.shirts,sox and shoes. The Gladstone Districts Walk of Hope is looking good
