kikko, i keep (tropical) fish as pets, because we arent allowed to have dogs
i used to have 15 (12 of them were related) platties and one sucker... then they all got velvet disease and ich (fungus) and now ive only got one platty(the youngest survived) and one sucker. they were fine for about 1.5 years and then BAM! dead within 2 weeks.
im going to cycle my tank for about 2 months and see how it goes (i.e wether the fungus has died or is still around) before slowly adding more fish to the tank.
ive got a friend who has a 6ft tank that she doesnt use, and will probably never use. i wonder if she will give it to me for $200... hmmmm. people think keeping fish is easy, i can tell you right now, its not at all easy. keeping the most fussy dog is easier than keeping fish.
but fighting fish are piss easy to keep. they keep themselves! my dad has owned 2 fighters, his previous one (godfrey) jumped out of his coffee jar one day, and we found him on the bench an hour later. we put him back in the tank and he lived on for 2 more years!

hhhmmm, fish are hard to keep? great! 🙁
I've just gotten a four ft tank with the intention of putting a whole heap of tropicals in there....
unfortunately a few family members whose names won't be mentioned (thanks guys :P) moved the tank and cracked the bottom, so i gotta get it fixed before i can do anything now :cry
dodge... tropical fish are especially hard to keep, dont be surprised if you have no luck keeping too many alive for the first few months.
the problem is, they eat too much and poop too much, and the poop they do makes the water poisonous to them, so if the toxins build up too much, they die.
make sure you only feed them twice a day at most!! and dont overfeed as this only contributes to making their home poisonous. and dont put too many fish in the tank either... this not only increases the poopage and poisonage, but they also compete for food and there is much bullying going on... fish can and will die from being too stressed.
a big big note for tropicals... keep your water temp constant! nothing kills a tropical faster than too hot or too cold water. and remember to do 1/4 - 1/3 water changes at least every fortnight.

hhhmmm, even better! lol
so are there any fish you recommend keeping StarBug?
He is ADORABLE!!!
For tropical fish try using an under gravel filter as opposed to a water filter as the under gravel type get the food down to the bottom and the microbes etc in the gravel get working which in turn break down the poop (as you so nicely put it) and it can then be used by the plants. Also only feed your fish once a day at the most, sometimes I starve the fish in our tanks (we've 4 in our house) for anything up to a week and a half at a time sometimes up to 2 weeks as food is not always that easy to come by in the wild. We only have the very occasional death in the tank and generally from old age so I must be doing something right but Starbug is right about the first month or so as the water has to sort itself out, a good way is to set up your tank put in your plants and stick in a few mollies and leave it for for a while maybe a month or so before putting in any other fish, mollies are very hardy and they're even used to establish marine tanks and we're talking salt water,
Here's my little princess in her favourite bag. Her name is Malli (short for Malibu...mmm coconut rum) and she fetches objects like milk bottle rings, bread tags, etc and will bring them back to our feet. She likes playing in water and walks on a leash on the golf course out the backyard. She comes to us when called, everytime. And loves broccoli and cauliflower. She is a Persian/Himalayan.

mollies and platys are good tropicals to start off with... and they breed like... well... lets just say youre always going to be finding babies in the tank so make sure you have lots of plants!
but... if you do get mollies/platys, make sure you have at least 2 females (better to have 3 or 4) for every male in the tank... ive had many female fish get stressed and jump out of the tank and die, or just get so exhausted that they die... the males only know about 2 things... food and f**king... so having too few females makes them very stressed, but having too many males will also get VERY agressive... they will litterally attack the weaker males. 1:3 is a good mix and is sure to give you many little fishies!
how can you tell whos who? its all in the anal fin... alot of pet store people dont know whats what so its best to know before you go in. the females actually have a proper anal fin, and they swim with it fanned out. the males have a gonopodium where their anal fin should be its an altered fin which is basically their manhood, they swim with it close to their bodies... its quite easy to tell the difference once you know what you are looking for. females are also usually bigger.
they are hardy fish, and quite pretty to look at... and the babies are SUPER cute!

Pugs cost about $900 from a good breeder with papers and vetcheck etc. Cheaper pugs are not usually carefully breeded. Some can be gr8 dogs, some can have heaps of problems. Research the breeders as there a few different sorts. Short pugs are squshed more lenghtways, have compressed vertebra, less snout, bulgier eyes an usually a shorter tail. The longer pugs have bigger eye sockets (and can close their eyes so have less eye probs) have a slight snout (less snuffle and less crease issues) a longer tail and full size vertebra. They have been breeded for 1300 yrs in China so the wrinkle on their forehead is the chinese good luck symbol.
Basil is a long pug. He is the best dog we could have hoped for. He will play full contact WWF in the yard, snuggle on the couch, he is fantastic with our & month old, is easy to take anywhere, he is a total clown but still gives a good warning bark- he barks instead of yapping. He loves the cat. Fetches, yadda yadda. Horses for courses. I have had Labs, kelpies and mutts before. and Basil is one of the best. I really recommend them.

starbug and dodge...
don't forget to vacumm ur tank...do it once a wekk, and it helps heaps too. it gets the excess stuff out from the bootm (with a son who is heavy handed...i need it)
we have neons and bloodsomethings (i am so bad this eh)...their see thru...i mean it...see thru...we also have mollies....1male to 3 females...necessary...as starbuggy said...keeps the boys happy
And she is rite, not easy, but i like the thing is, their fun...my son loves getting real close and doing the maccas add thing....follow my fingers...and kissing them thru the glass....so many kiss marks when i clean it each week...
and dodge, also grab a in tank seperation net (or another tank) cause like starbuggy said, they'll breed. I put the pregnant female into it...otherwise u have to be quick to get the babies out...otherwise the big ones hunt them down to eat them...
also, make sure the difference in size between ur largest and smallest...well...don't make the little ones snack size.....its like a swimming dessert to them...
otherwise, have fun..
I have a dog, two cats, and 19 fishes..yeah all those kids weren't enuf...
cheers
Donna
Ps: I bought the tank for Big A's chrissy present a few years back...he broke it on he way home...took it straight back...and the ppl were laughing hard for ages...everytime we went in....
