This is going to the US soon.
Left in a shed since 1972, when the rego ran out.
nooooo!
It's a 1955.
Looks good.
if you ask me,with the work involved with this car and the us to aus $ conversion rate at the moent it wasnt the bargain of the century.i think the buyer will be in for quite abit of work with this kombi.had it been an accident free kombi in this condition then that would be a whole different story!
A lot of good bits on it.

I'm told the bumpers are worth $1000 each, the rear lights $500 ea, still has the original wipers, and factory safari windows!

eh at least it'll be restored by someone 🙂 seeing how slowly splitties have been going on this forum recently
Jon
9. If you look carefully, below the last "2"under the bumper, is the exhaust pipe.
This Kombi was sold by Light Motors.
to be quite honest i would have valued this splitty around the 10kus$ mark if it was accident free(not to many splittys that sit in a shed for 30 years, especially a 55 model)but ive noticed the prices of vws onthe samba on all vws has rissen dramatically over the past 1-1.5 years...i think due to the conversion rate!used to be about 30-40 split window beetles on the samba 1-1.5 years ago now alot of them are going back to europe.was thinking of buying a split window beetle(green 52 deluxe) off the samba about 1.5 years ago for $3300us from sweden(was on the samba for over 5 months and now that same car will fetch around the 3.5-4.5k in euros???thats why if you look on all the european vw websites, nobody is asking for thier cars in us$ now its all in euros.
The exterior sunvisor gives it a mean look.
who ever told you those prices is full of s**t!,look on the samba and you can buy a set of nos BARNDOOR taillights for around the $500us $ mark about $600au???and as for the bumpers being worth 1000 each????this isnt a pre 45 kdf wagen or a rometsch its a pre 60 kombi which to my knowledge had the same ribbed bumpers up to 1960..if you can find me someone that will pay 2000us$ or au$ for that matter ill sell him or her a set for half that!!!sounds like alot of veedubbers are throwing ridiculus prices in the air like the wrecker in brissi that reckons that his steering box is worth 700 pound????if its something super rare like a set of split window beetle popouts(sold for over 2000 euros on ebay germany a few weeks back then i can understand as that was the first pair that i had ever seen for sale.or try finding even in europe a pre 49 split window beetle headlight??? almost impossible thats why they cost 450-500 euros each???same as the aus flash kits and so on.........
safaries are nice and rare but you can still find original ones in heaps of countries in the world in wrecking yards???me and dad pulled almost 20 sets out of splittys in a matter of 2 weeks searching wreckers in 1 country in europe(going on a parts hunt).and theres a few other countries in the world that had them installed in every single splitty that was sent there, you just have to know where to look!
but id have to totally agree with CHE CASTRO on this one.it will hopefully be resored and on the road again...and hopefully he keeps the original paint or for that matter keeps everything as original as possible!
It's going to the US. It will probably get gutted, roof chopped and a mid mounted Chev with 9 inch diff.
I have no idea as to the price this bus when for, but as usual, Aussie's are to slow on the uptake....Yet another low mile early bus is leaving our shores!!! My brother has attempted to move a couple of very easy resto's recently on this forum, and all he got for his trouble, was a bunch of bitching about the price! A lot of talk, but little else. Sure if your lucky enough to find bargains, then go get it. I still get them from time to time.....A couple of grand for a early panelvan in similar nick to this kombi....Come on guys get real!! Hava look at what these things are fetching OS!!! And you wonder way the guys in the UK and US are buying everything up!!
What accident damage are you refering to KDFking? It looks to me that it has a busted door hinge a minor dent in the door...
Sure if you want a nice shiny bus, then maybe the price was high, but IMHO leave it the way it is, just get it road worthy and leave it at that! (Of course I would hot rod it too!!)
Bolt the door back on, service the mechanicals and your away! Betcha the dude that bought it will do just that and more than likely slammed it to hell and back too!....What a blast that will be! And imagine a right hook bus in the US....BIG crowd winner that!
Heck...I wouldn't even wash it!!!
Again, this my humble opinion, you most problably think I'm talking out of my ar#e!

This bus' starting price was $2000. Not sure what it went for, but even with damage to it, looks like a bargain.
We'll just have to keep on bringing our share back in.
the kombi went for 6.5kau and the damage was a bit more than a broken hinge and mirror.if you check out the cars for sale section its listed there under an ebay 55 (i think).and believe me its alot worst that it looks.i gave a price estimate as i LOVE patina on an old vw.when i go hunting for my pre 49 thats what ill be looking for....original paint..infact original everything(unmolested!!!).as for it going to the states the majority of vw splittys are going to the UK but this one didnt for a good reason, because of the extent of the damage!!
one thing that this bus has going for it is total PATINA!!! fully original and it looks great(which i love),i would rather have a car fully original with its original paint and everything else than a ground up resto???had one of the first beetles ever made after the war offered to me last year in germany(it still had the original army green paint on it that the english used..it was an english officers car..and it had almost all the kdf parts onit(taillights, round numberplate light and even the dash sign)but he was offered 35keuros...about 60kau$ and he wanted me to beat that offer which in no way i could
.but i would have bet you $100 that if this kombi were accident free it wouldent have gone to the states it would have gone to england,(because its rhd)but who knows,i bought a 58 beetle for $300 from the trading post in brisbane after it was listed 2 and supposidly nobody came out to even look at it,i bought it on the spot and my plans were to restore it when i bought it but because of overseas travel i listed it on ebay usa and got $2380us for it??the guy that bought it owns over 40 vws(including a couple of split bugs and just bought it because he wanted a RHD from aus!!
which i have no problems with as if its true about being able to drive lhd vehicles in any state in aus as long as they are over 30 years old then we should start buying back some of those splittys from the states while we have more buying power.if they had more split window beetles in the states i would be buying my pre 49 from over there.tried buying a pre 46 off the samba last year when i was in NY but the guy never got back to me after repeated ph calls and emails???thats the main reason why im going overseas now for a long stay.to find my dream car before it becomes another one of those unaccomplishable goals!!used to want a schwimmer when i was 12 till even now(used to cost 20-25kdm)about 15-20kau back then ,,,now look what thier worth!!!just like i want a kdf beetle(pre45)and i know their still out there because kdfkid from europe and his mate have found 7 in the last 8 years searching all through europe.they just sold a complete (very restorable barn find)51 split cabriolete in germany for 10 or 12 k euros....my only point being is this splitty wasnt a steal or a great deal as there are heaps of rare vws out there for not so much money!!!iv fully lost count on how many barndoors i could have bought in europe
SORRY
But bumpers worth $1000 each.
Who ever told you this is talking shit.
I sold a set last year to Waltermitty for $350.The pair!!!!.
They were in better condition than mine and they only cost me $120 to have straightened and they look like new.
The tail lights can be bought for about $250 the pair, we are getting some for the klub kombi, which is also a 55
I spoke to someone who saw this bus and has dealt in splits for about 15 years, he reckons it needed both A nd B pillars repaired as well as the usual sills outriggers , jacking points and the hole in the roof, after doing all this worrk it will then need a respray so the Patina Has gone
This bus was sold after being described as original and a small amount of damage to the right hand side.
It had a whopping big hole cut in the roof and the right hand side needed major work .
This was way too expensive and I think the new owner will be very disapointed.
As I said befor a mate in the next street to me just bought a nice 63 panel van, very straight and complete for $200. yes two hundred not thousands.
What really does piss me off is that the seller of the 55 made out he didnt really know anything about volkswagens and even told someone who enquired that he gets them as he sells stuff from deceased estates, he IS a DEALER.
my thoughts and I feel sorry for the buyer.
Also if they are in this condition at this price , they can all go overseas, that way the word will get out that Aussies rip you off and that will stop them buying them.
Also if this got that much, How much is mine worth????
Cheers
Dave

ONE MIIILLION DOLLARS!! HAHAHAHAHAAAA!!
I would have swapped mine for a FatBoy or a rat bug, but no one seems to have one.
Cheers
Dave
well said dave!!!!😉
Just saying it as it is, us split owners are getting enough crap as it is without people thinking that we all think heaps of crap are worth big money.
Cheers
Dave
Its gone and we missed out...
Its all semantics about whos buying what, the fact is some are gonna leave Oz and some are not...What we have realise is that these things are worth loads more there than thay are here!
Sorry to hear the bus was a bit of a rotter, sounds like the buyer has been taken by a slug, but thats what happens on the internet....I still like to see my purchases up real close if Im gonna part with big bucks. A couple of hundred buck is ok to do if, but serious dollars is not good....
Anyone got the address for the shmuck who ripped the yank? I have my baseball bat handy!!!
😉 😉
...if we don't buy them then they will keep going OS
Gotta check my lottery tickets now!!...but too late for a couple that have just been lost...
