stupid me deleted the .sparseimage file (and im feeling devastatingly stupid for doing so), and now 10gb of mp3s, uni stuff and pictures is hidden in the depths of my drive... and i have no idea how to get it back!
i know the files are still there, because there is the same amount of used space/free space as before i deleted the sparseimage file.
i know theres a few mac users on here, maybe you have some ideas?
thanks in advance!!

I have a G4 apple ibook, I am still getting to know it! But you could try opening the trash up and anything that has been deleted normally goes in there, and it wont be completey removed unless you click 'empty trash'.
If it is in there just drag them out onto your desktop screen and all will be good!!
Hope that works....if not, I have noooo idea!
If it's not in your trash, I would visit the Apple website, there is a lot of free downloads and upgrades there.

its not in my trash, because the sparseimage is a mountable disk image, once you reboot it disappears, if you delete it,... well...
ive tried disk repair, whatsize? and filebuddy to try and track down the missing info!
even the grep command doesnt show anything!
(sorry, i should clear up the concept of deleting... i put this file into my trash, and realised, too late, that due to it being a disk image it would have been dismounted when the computer restarted...)
*slaps herself around for being so stupid!!*

Do you still have your software installation discs? You might be able to get it from there.

tried that.
disk repair wont show anything, and the software recover will just wipe the whole drive.
a very nasty situation indeed... all my emails, bookmarks, settings, pictures, mp3s and... a years worth of uni stuff has just gone into serious hiding!
seems when you lose something on a unix-based system, you lose it really good!
thanks for the ideas peoples...keep them coming, im sure theres a way to find this!

Does a unix based system mean you are on a network? If you are, the normal practice is to back up the whole network regularly (daily at my work), if that's the case then someone could retieve it for you.
Good luck!

im on a network, but that doesnt have anything to do with a unix based system (mac OS is based on unix, so everyone using a mac is using a unix based system)
last time i tried backing up my files to our (home) network (a windows box running as the server) it told me i had around 720 hours to transfer 7gig of files. i didnt feel like waiting that long.
