Hey all,

Back from the U.K. in one peice 😉

Never got a chance to go out to Essex and check out the VW action there, I had no idea my WHOLE trip had been secretly organised by my girlfriend so there was no time whatsoever for VW sidetracks!

anyhow I am interested in doing up a Thing, I quite like them.

Does anyone know of any around?

You'll be lucky to find any in Aus - they are the US version of the original Kubelwagen, and were never sold in Aus.

We had our own "jeep like" version of the VW - called the Country Buggy. Only made for 2 years, 68 and 69, and had 6volts (left over parts from earlier years) 1300 engines and bus reduction hubs, so they had a low top speed but great climbing ability.

Unfortunately, the South African Army cancelled an order for 30,000 of them so there was no incentive to keep them in production.

type 182's & 181's are very rare in Australia as Rob said....

there were 2 x LHD type 181 "things" at the VW Nationals in Sydney on Easter Sunday..

and 1 x RHD type 182 "trekka" ... they were all in excellent condition...

About the only way to have one in Australia would to buy one of these...
I don't know if any were for sale....

Best of luck...

would be easier to bring one over from the UK...
I believe 400 RHD 182's were sold in the UK....

There was one advertised in the Qld trading post a little while ago - not sure if its been sold though...can't remember all details but came with front/rear cuts to fix rust etc and advertised price was around $4500 or so. The seller was also at the dubs at the pub (with pics of the car).

I have to finish the oval before I'm allowed a thing....or buggy or split....
