Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shelly Howard and her son killed in drag strip tragedy.

Her PR agents release...
"The car went into a mid track wheelstand. Basically when the car started to lift at around the 900 foot mark, she actually got out of the throttle (eye witnesses that I have talked to said the flames went out and there was silence) the air got under the car and the left side body panels started to come off. It (they) probably acted like a rudder which turned the car 180 degrees and back down facing the starting line. But by the time it started back up the track it well well beyond the finish line, probably 1500 ft (there was a time that came up on the scoreboards), the car being one of the nitro variety are hard to shutoff to begin with, but Shelly was probably unconscious from the violent spin and crashing back down to the pavement, so hitting the kill switch or the fuel shut off were probably not an option. The car refired when it hit the ground and was under full acceleration from all reports (including Tom Conways statement to his son Shane) as it headed back toward the starting line. It did hit the wall a couple times in the same lane she started the run in, and basically stayed in that lane until it tragically struck the team tow vehicle which had son Brian in it. It hit at a very high rate of speed, as the flames were as high coming back as they were going down track ."

Gawd..

I don't know this person, as I don't follow the sport closely, however I hope people don't overreact and want to ban all motorsport, blah blah blah, as it is the risk that these people take, are happy to take, and love to take; and that is what makes it such an attraction for us fans.

Very unfortunate. :o

Fatalities are very rare in drag racing and motor sport in general.

More people die playing rugby league in a year than a decade in motorsport.

Even in the US no one calls for banning of the sport.

I am a fan of Formula 1, as you may tell from my name, or half of it. 1994 saw the death of two drivers on one weekend, and even then there were murmors of banning and all sorts of knee jerk reactions.. However, no one has died(drivers) since.

I think people accept this, as rare as it happens, as part of the sport. Unfortunately.

the very first time i went go-karting (ever), at an outdoor circuit, there was a 41year old male who had flipped akart on the inside of the track and subsequently had a heart attack.

we could see the tarps coving the kart from where we were sitting and see the movement of cpr until death was pronounced.

needless to say, no mention was made by dad or i to mum.

R.I.P shelly.
