I am starting to think about trading the cabrio in on a more "sensible" car that is a little more practical. Wanting to buy another VW I was looking at a Bora, but was told that they are "too boxy and chunky" inside and that if I want a car with a bit more room to carry all "my stuff" then I should look at the new golf, while it is a smaller car than the Bora it uses it's space more wisely. Has anyone been in one of these ? I am not keen on going to a dealership just yet as I don't want to be hassled

We went up to the sunshine coast to get our new beetle vert serviced earlier this year. We had stuff on the back seat and the boot and both were full.

They gave us the new golf as a loan car and EVERYTHING fit in the hatch area so there is lots more room.

I found that I hit my head getting in and out if I wasn't careful and there sounded like a rattle (very quiet but still there) around the drivers door. It may have been wind noise though that sounded a bit like a rattle.

The biggest problem I found was that the rear view mirror on the drivers door is split in to 2 convex areas. One that is a light convex and the other that is a very strong convex. I use my mirrors all the time and it was very dangerous having to refocus my eyes to suit the mirror all the time. If I were to buy one, I would take it somewhere and get the glass replaced.

On the plus side it drive really well. I am thinking about getting the 2 litre diesel version when the lease runs out on Nu Bug (we will keep her though).

It was a lot more boring to drive though and it would be just another car I think after a month of ownership.

My thoughts anyway.

Mine little brother (23) has just bought a 2005 TDi golf. He is rapped with it, has had it two weeks and it is still on the original tank of diesel 🙂 It runs about 5.0L / 100km on city cycle driving and has good grunt also.

Good looking car that is full of euro style and functionality.

If ya got the $$ its a smart buy.

I have a new MKV as a company car and i gotta say its an absolutly brilliant car, i currently have a 1.6 manual Comfortline, being 6ft 4 i find i have much more room in it than the mkiv its comfortable, rides much better than the mkiv and i think looks much better too!.
2.0 TDI is awesome and is proven faster than the petrol or last GTI
1.9 TDI is a really nice car too, gutsy and not qiute as peaky as the 2.0
But for a general A to B car, i personally think the 1.6 is the best, Plenty of go, and on as run from sydney to melbourne i got over 800km to the tank!

When my NB went in for it's second service ,I had a new 2.0lt auto Golf with only 150kms on the speedo as a loaner. It didn't do a thing for me.The new car smell was putrid, had to really stand on the brakes to get it to stop and the dash and guage lay out reminded me of an early Passat or one of those cheap things from Korea. On the plus side, the motor was nippy and had excellent steering. Wouldn't swap the NB for one if you paid me.

Hehehe dookhead:kiss

Hey Trace
I looked at it seriously too at the Nats. A GTI rocked up and it was the VW Marketing Dude trying it out. I climbed all through it, it was nice on the inside but as you say it wont make you smile everytime you see it. My top priority at the moment was to see how a future family would fit. He had his wife and kids with him so it was a great opprtunity to see how the baby seat fit....umm not too well. It was extremely cramped in the front passenger seat, like so cramped that your shins are sitting on the dash (i kid you not). So sorry but the Mk V is out of this little girls books. Id be looking at the bora or passat.

I've driven the 2.0TDI and it is awesome! The one I drove also had the chip reprogrammed and even though I was flogging it, it was still doing 7L/100km

but I don't think it would be faster than the last GTI... you have to keep on changing the gears to drive it quick

I must say there is no way I would trade the vert on the golf but as an additional car it would be OK but only after getting rid of that outside mirror glass.

The Bora has the same doors and nearly all of the roof skin of the Golf, so I'd be surprised if there'd be much more leg room in the rear. It's only longer due to the boot overhang. The wheel base is identical.

Here are the specs of the Golf V and Jetta V:

Jetta / Bora
                Front Rear
Volume 50.0 ft³ 41.0 ft³
Head Room 38.5 in 37.2 in
Shoulder Room 54.8 in 53.1 in
Leg Room 41.2 in 35.4 in
Golf V
                Front Rear
Volume 49.8 ft³ 38.2 ft³
Head Room	38.6 in 37.4 in
Shoulder Room	53.7 in 52.7 in
Leg Room 41.5 in 33.5 in
You lose some height in the Bora, and gain around 1.9 in (4.8 cm) in the rear legroom.

Here's what the Bora Mk 5 looks like:

(From VW Vortex: click me)

It's due here possibly around September to early next year. I wouldn't be buying a Bora mk4 at the moment unless you can get an excellent discount as your resale of a Bora Mk4 will go down by about $4-5k overnight when the new model is released.
