As I am doing this on my own, I would have thought to remove the engine first just from a weight point of view.
Which is easier?

I don't think the weight issue is a big problem. I took the engine and gearbox out as a unit with only a trolley jack and a scissor type jack. If you do take them out as a unit you will find that you need to lower the engine end a bit to allow the gear selector shaft to clear the beam it sits over. After you've lowered the engine push the kombi forward a couple of inches (with the gearbox supported). You can then lower the gearbox end.country dubber wrote:The manual (1979 Kombi) I have says when removing the gear box remove the engine and gearbox as one unit.
