Hey Guys/Dolls!

I've been onto my Mum's case about computerised modern cars, being so temperamental expensive to repair etc.

Having now lived with a reliable Kombi in the house, AND after experiencing electronic hiccups, AND being quoted $800 for repairs on HER 4 year old Barina (on parts that shouldn't need repairing so soon 52000k's), she's starting to think outside of the box.

So, she doesn't want classic though! DOH!!! She wants power steering and aircon and the whole lot. I've been looking at early 90's Golfs, Jetta's etc. I had a '99 Golf in Germany, and it was a beaut. They have stayed pretty rock solid throughout their production history haven't they? (i.e. no stupid engineering mutations on particular year models?).

I'd like to stay under 8K on a new car (after she has discarded the Barina).

Is anybody using something similar as a daily driver? Just after some stories about reliability, parts and repair costs.

And are most of the classic repairers also interested in working on water cooled dubs? I've met one who won't touch 'em that's all!

Any help would be most appreciated as always!

Does anyone know who owns this? Or the state of it?

Volkswagen Jetta Mk2 VW Golf Sedan 1.8L Auto Sydney

Supposedly it won a category at the nats and is for sale on Ebay. It might be just what I'm looking for.

I've heard of gearbox problems in 99 rnage model Golfs....lots have bee replaced. I suppose it depends on what your Mum likes to drive. So she's in a Barina.....maybe look for an early Polo or something similar size. Honda Civics are pretty good value too.
