Howdy,
I am thinking of getting some 15" fat arse Whitewall Inserts for my wagon, but last time I used inserts (Radials on a 60's Benz) I wasn't very happy with em at all cos
1) The edge of the insert was slowly cutting in to the sidewall of the tyre
2) The edge of the insert went black
I was subsequently told that the inserts were designed for Cross Ply tyres, and if you run em on Radials you get the aforementioned problems.
I was thinking that maybe I could attempt to silicon them on OR lubricate them.
What do you guys think ?

i had them on radials they were okay mate but they fit the best on cross ply tyres as they were shaped for em id silicone em but remember you have to use tubes and theyre a piece of piss to fit i did mine myself its so easy!
let us know how you go mate
mattie
stuipid beetle breaks everytime i drive it.....
I'm running mine on Michelin XZX's. no dramas.
there's a place here in Adelaide that will cut and paint whitewalls on any tyre. there may be someone near you?
vwtyp2: you running em on 165's?
...and Robert's ya father's brother...
I have used the whitewall spray on dude numerous times. He shaves off a shallow 1/2 or 3/4 inch band around your tyre and then fills it with some rubbery paint stuff. He does a good job and they look shmich when first done, but you only have to kiss the kerb once (like when the Girlfriend drives your car) and they look like smeared poo. They also slowly deteriorate and after 12 months look quite faded. Sounds like I should give the big ass inserts another go. Cheers dudes

yep
coolies
Is that WhiteWallGuy still around? I heard he sold his business...

I heard the same thing about inserts (they mark the tyre and they get dirty) but so what I thought. Any other method will have its own drawbacks. Even with the expensive radials that have the white band around, they still get marked and you can't do anything about it. At least with inserts you can throw them out after few years and get new ones. The painted on ones crack within 12 months and you have to re do them too. I reckon inserts are the best way to go

I used the whitewall dude about a month ago and was the same old fart that has been doing them for years
im running 15" on 165's and 135's.. on the 165's theyre sweet - i never got the digging, or blackening.. 135's they stick out a fair bit.. but look good on the road still mine do go brownish.. but metho cleans them up pretty nice without bleaching it and making it brittle.. im also running them on tubeless tyres.

Me gots 165 on 4.5 rims so sounds like I should be AOK, so where's the best place to get some - hopefully within Adelaide, but happy to order from anywhere in OZ
Cheers
use liquid jif on then comes up great
try George from classic vw and he will post them to u
not in Adelaide but Dan might know a local
Ok, just received some info from antique tyre supplies re inserts
1.they were designed for cross ply tyres and work better on cross ply. The basic reason in that redials have a softer side wall and that is why the inserts can work into the side of it.
2.The reason they discolor is because of the oil in tyres. The oil seeps out and stains the insert and there is not much you can do about it unfortunately because once you see it on the front it has already penetrated through from the back.
3.Jiff and a kitchen scourer is the best method to keep em clean.
4.Portawalls MUST be fitted with tubes as where they fit is where the tyre seals.
they are cool.as resto said Jif does the trick real well/....
