Hi all,
I have just been told by ACT Motor Registry that they won't allow me to register my Buggy on historic ('club') rego. Their reasoning is that it is a 'modified' vehicle and not a standard factory car.
I'm a bit cheesed, mainly because when I first enquired with them a month ago (when considering buying the car), I was told it would be OK. Of course, I have no details of who I talked to at that time. Back then, as far as they were concerned, the car would be a '61 (chassis date), and therefore would classify as historic.
Can anyone shed any light on this type of situation?
Is there anyone out there with historic rego on a modified VW?
Apparently I can fight it but I'd like to have some backup.
Why historic? Seems a waste!
I think that the only mods that are allowed under histeric rego, is anything to do with safety.
Eg: head lights, brakes, seatbelts.
Lee.
some people are like slinky's
they have no useful purpose
but they are fun to watch
when you push them down the stairs
It's up to the clubs.
The spirit of the scheme is to allow for contemporary modifications. IE. the type of mods done 30 or more years ago to that sort of car.
For the moment I just want to get the car on the road legally, because I don't see it yet as ready for a daily driver. I want to slowly bring it into more use, however (for example) I can't see me using it too much during a Canberra winter, with no roof or sides! Being a 2 seater I can't take the family out either, so it is only going to be used at the moment for club drives, etc, in good weather.
This may change down the track (year or two, especially when the children start leaving), however currently I just want to get it on the road for an occasional drive.
I was originally told it would be fine for Historical rego but of course this has now changed. Argh! Other comments?
Damn changing rules and not a leg to stand on - through a club about your only bet
Let me out, When I call my name

Let's not beat around the bush. Go for some facts here

The Following is correct for QLD
To get Historic Rego the vehicle need sto be over 30 years of age and verified by a registered inc club, ie the Manx Dune Buggy Club, Australia. You also need to be a current financial Member of the club.
QLD calls it Special Interest Vehicle Registration amoung other things.
There is no issue at all with modifications as that has nothing to do with the vehcile being historical or not. Look at a Hot rod for a prime example of this.
You really need to get the rules for the ACT as they should ask / tell you what needs to be done to comply.
No mods is a crock of ^%% that is why it is left to Club to authenticate in QLD and the TPT doesn't even look at them.

Why copy when you can own an original ?
Meyers Manx Australia
Your chassis is a 61....but what year / model is your shell?
I have been told the shell is late 60's / early 70's...but the rego guys don't care about the age of the shell. As far as they are concerned, if it didn't come out of the factory like this, it doesn't comply for historic rego.
Hence, my raising of the subject here (and the Offroad forum) to get other ideas.

The rules in NSW are different. They only permit original vehicles with period accessories to meet Conditional Registration rules. Whilst the RTA does permit Clubs do conduct their own "inspections" most of the Clubs go with the standard pink slip requirement to protect the individual Club Registrars. In NSW it would not be a wise move to put a car on vintage plates that was not as per original manufacture. ( accessories allowed) The rules have been tightened a fair bit over the last 4 or 5 years.
As Club Registrar for one NSW CLub I reckon this vehicle would not meet the standards of the RTA
Common misconception. Period modifications are perfectly acceptable in NSW. It is only clubs that keep perpetuating the no modification business. Ring them and ask - they'll give it to clubs who are involved in the system in wiritng.
Unless the rules have changed, call again and see if you get someone else, maybe the first person you spoke to, who will put it through. Often the way. Speak to two different people in an organisation with two different interpretations of the rules. Worth a go perhaps.
I have looked into this a lot more and I think I will basically be admitting defeat soon.
In ACT, to get this buggy on the road, I have to have an engineers certificate, plus it has to be inspected by the RTA for basic roadworthiness, etc, before they rego it. It is actually the chief inspector that told me he would knock it back for historic rego...reckons that (depending on the car) it should be OK for general rego.
I discussed this when I visited a meeting of the ACT Council of Car Clubs (!) last night, and they have been fighting the same thing. There are many modified cars in all of the ACT clubs, and they are not allowed to have Historic rego. They have been fighting for a while, still are, but not really getting anywhere currently.
As stated, I have to rego it through ACT and not NSW.....and as well as that, I have to be a member of an ACT recognised car club, and not an outside club. Grrr....
Think I'll be putting on 6months rego and throwing my hands in the air....
