Who wouldn't know what the nazi flag signifies?
Nazi gesture on the Central Coast

By MARK NOLAN

April 21, 2005

JUST four days out from Anzac Day, a small town has erupted in anger as a Nazi flag flies prominently in their neighbourhood.

Mannering Park residents have contacted the local council, a Federal MP, the NSW Police and even the Australian Federal Police – but authorities may be powerless to remove the hated symbol of Adolf Hitler from a backyard flagpole.

The offending flag's owners, Darren Mackay and Jenni Duncombe, claim they bought the flag from Morisset Markets for $10 and hoisted it up the flagpole about a week ago as a bit of fun.

They have now refused to remove the flag after Ms Duncombe claimed an angry neighbour threatened to hurt her and her baby if it was not taken down.

Ms Duncombe claimed yesterday that she did not realise the significance of the Nazi flag until the controversy erupted.

She said her four-month-old daughter Breeana enjoyed watching the brightly coloured flag blow around in the breeze.

A council spokeswoman said investigations were under way to determine if council had the power to force the flag's removal.

The council has also requested that the couple reduce the height of the flagpole because it is taller than the allowed 6m limit.

I always thought it was the 8th of the 8th (hitler's birthday).. And H is the 8th letter of the alphabet so jewish people get upset at the number 88?

Shows how much of a "free country" we have though.. can't even fly a flag

it just shows how little some people know about the world around them and the history before them. WTF do they think ANZAC day is about then? SOO SOO SOOOO STUPID!

the swastika used to mean something alot less sinister before hitler took it for his own regime.

its the sanskrit (i think) symbol of the sun, a very ancient but powerful and not at all sinister symbol.
try telling people that now, they will think youre nuts or a nazi, or both.
in the beginning, the universe was created.
this made alot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.

I told that to a guy the other day and he got very argumentative and said I was wrong among other things. I still can't get over the fact that these people have no idea of the significance of the flag.

so hitler mirrored the symbol?
in turn reversing the direction of the "arms"

Originally it was used either way.

The Germans were using it a long time before Hitler and the National Socialists as a symbol of the Aryan people.

Some cultures in the past had differentiated between the clockwise swastika and the counter-clockwise sauvastika. In these cultures the swastika symbolized health and life while the sauvastika took on a mystical meaning of bad-luck or misfortune.

the swastika is reversed and also flat, not tilted at 45 deg and in a white circle with a red background.

On the other hand, like Che said, the symbol takes on a completly different meaning when you add a white circle on a red background. It takes on a symbol that is internationally recognised which makes it hard to think of it as anything else.

She probably isn't posting some of the holocaust pictures above that babies cradle? Maybe she should be made to? What's the difference?

BTW - I've been to Buchenwald Concentration Camp and seen many nasty things in Germany. Ignorance is no excuse for this sort of thing. I often mildly offend with cheekiness, but this? I cant put it into words. She should definitely stop passing on those stupid genes.

I'm on the Central Coast and it's in all the local papers. What amazes me is these people do not think they are doing anything wrong, even AFTER people have educated them.

she is displaying the Nazi flag, not just a Swastika.
the Swastika is prominent in Muslim and Hundu too.
I went to a restaurant in Bali last month called the Suastikka, and they had the symbol displayed prominently.
It does depend on what context you place it in, but when you fly the Nazi flag, you gotta expect some kind of reaction. Ignorance is not an excuse.

I know I'll cop some flack for this comment but, Hitler was a very clever man with some great Ideas. He gave us our beloved Volkswagens after all.
Although I'm not down with the whole genocidal maniac thing at all.

actually, that Hitler thing is very true, for the first five or so years of his rule he was a very good leader, taking Germany out of the absolute bottom of the depression into a massive industrial power. He promised that everyone would have jobs- and they did, in factorys. He was very clever, untill he didn't finish off Britain and then attacked Russia. 3 fronts- Europe, Russia, and Afrika= too much for a small country like Germany. Then he went mental and the rest is history. I personally class Stalin a level above Hitler in terms of Evilness. Yes Hitler was responsible for targeting a group of (Jews, Gypsies, disabled) and exterminating 6-10 million of them but Stalin far supparsed him in numbers of his own people and others killed. He was better at it, the stupid Germans had to keep records of everything which was their undoing. Anywho as I said before the entire family are idiots.:duh

You have to wonder about some PPL's capacity for intelligence. I can't believe that they don't know the significance of that flag, and the emotions it would cause by flying it. especially close to Anzac day. I have often wondered though wether some Veterans who fought for Germany, their motherland, have any patriotic feeling for that flag. They fought for their country under the flag, beliving that they were protecting their country and its PPL, the same as we did under our respective flags. It is a sad thought that some of these veterans have to feel any shame, but for the actions of their superiors, some of who were completely insane. They had their fair share of wartime luatic's, but so did the Japanese and the Allie's.

Most of them just bought the propaganda, and were simply not aware that they were doing anything to be morally ashamed of. A great deal of things that happened, hardly anyone knew about anyway.

The people of Weimar were brought the 10 minutes walk up the hill to Buechenwald to view the piles of emaciated Jewish bodies, and most were completely stunned.

If you were on the front lines fighting for your country, you probably wouldn't ask questions either. It's more important to avoid copping hot lead through your cranium. Many old soldiers have said their piece on German TV, and after being enlightened, have expressed regret.

BTW - things aren't any different today, with the U.S. and our own soldiers. Do service people feel proud about invading Iraq looking for WMD's that everyone knew didn't exist? Why wasn't Bush up for War Crimes charges after Iraq? If it wasn't deliberate, then he should still have been charged for gross incompetence. You can still be charged with manslaughter even if a death wasn't intentional. If you hold the media in your palm though, you can make people believe anything, and be rewarded for it too. Look at the election results. What a joke!
