hey all.. my computer is running like a mutha, so i wanna formatt it.. i have some stuff on here from a few years ago, when i was studying multimedia and i really dont want to lose my folio and stuff.. it is too big to put onto CD's so i bought another Hard disk.. the plan is to move all important stuff to the new HDD, then format the first one and re-install windows, and use the first hard disk to run windows and program files off, and the new one for Storage
i have the new HDD set up as primary Slave in Cmos, using cable select, and it recognises it at boot up, when it does the RAM count.. but i cannot access it via windows, to transfer my stuff over.. i assume it needs to be formatter to NTFS? how can i formatt it withiut being able to see it?

IF you need to format it you will have to do it in dos or the like. I am no expert but you should be able to it in comand prompt
Also did you make sure the jumper on the back of the HDD was set to slave aswell???
jumper is set to cable select.. grey plug is plugged in which means slave
i dont know what drive it has been allocated to formatt in command prompt.

It will proably be automatically set as the next letter to your last device... there fore if you have a CD drive as e: it may be f: just go to comand prompt and see have a go at selecting it
What version of windows are you running?
XP pro - cant find it in command prompt.
so frustrating!!!

Um, not to imply anything but are you sure the power to the hard drive is connected.
I cant remember the last time i connected up a new hardrive as a slave but i connected up an old hardrive the other day as a slave and i had no troubles.

interesting.
If you are running XP you may have to intialise the drive.
Right click on my computer, select 'Manage'
Then go into the disk manager, see if you can see your drive. If you can, right click it and select 'new volume' or something similar, follow the prompts to format your drive.
Sweet.
gibbo is the man!
formatting now..
thank you both for your help🙂
