Hi everyone. My wife and I are looking at buying a Kombi to do some travelling around oz. We're looking at a '76 camper (2lt) with interior and body in very good condition. i think the motor's okay - but i'm no mechanic! the only thing that concerns me is that it is an automatic. Do you guys have any opinion on automatics? should i steer away from them? a couple of people have warned me the auto transmission is very expensive when it breaks down. someone else said it will have no guts. any ideas to help?
thanks,
keaney

We've got a 1700 auto kombi and the only downfall is big hills. On the highway she sits comfortably on a 110km. We tow a 12ft tinny behind as well and she doesn't even know it's there. We had to put a new torque converter in at xmas ( $200.00 ) and bought a spare gearbox from Alan at Stokers Siding NSW for $500.00 just in case.

thanks guys. i've had done a search of some old postings on this topic and that seems to be the general opinion held about the autos.

i had a drive of the bus yesterday and it seems to drive fine. the seller assures me that he has had it serviced regularly and it does look as though it has been maintained well. problem is he has no receipts for most of the work he claims he has done because he always paid cash! not being mechanically minded myself, is there anything i should look for in particular? might get an RAA/NRMA check but the seller lives a fair distance away and will not be easy to organise. also costs $190 for full inspection! might not have any choice, though?

For $190.00 for a full inspection it's worth every cent!

yeah, i agree traumin. the only pain is that the seller lives 45 mins from the inspection centre and they need to have the car for 1/2 a day. hope the seller is obliging! depends how desperate he is to sell, i s'pose.

It will soon sort out if he is telling the truth or not! and its cheap insurance for you, as to it's condition!
