Hi everone, just recently had to have psychometrc test for a position I have applied for and found that half the questions are so situational and silly I could have answered either way on some but had to answer yes or no even though I had no idea has anyone else had to do this? I find it hard to grasp the fact that a computer can decide if your a nut or a good employee. What happened to the good old interview?

not only is the world is full of idiots but more & more so aussie.

dont worry, the biggest idiots are those jokers that would put their faith in such a test. pity the poor fools. whatever happened to a fair & frank interview followed by a 3month trial period????

Thats was my thoughts I applied for this position in december and i don't have a problem doing the test but it's a long process that you wonder if it really does give a true indicator of your work ability and your ability to work under stress i guess i will have to wait to see how go

well you'd have to have your head screwed on for that sort of job. too many limp wrists would have seen "accident" victims or other day to day hazards of the job and chucked a stress leave attack and made their organisation wide numbers look bad. the little computer test would be some smarties answer to that... prob got them a promo.

i think someone on here is a paramedic. find out who and get the lowdown from them.

psychometric tests dont prove anything.
i dont know why employers bother.
in the beginning, the universe was created.
this made alot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.

I had to do one to get on the "sparks".

I honestly don't believe I have ever had my time so thoroughly wasted as I did for that 3 hours.
I must have passed.
But then, so did the guy that's been arrested for threatening woman & babies, & threatening to blow up trains.

Works well doesn't it?
Well my friends are gone & my hair is grey, I ache in the places where I used to play.

its only the peole who sit through the test that keeps the test in use,
if people just said, if you want me to apply for your position you need to extend me the courtesy of an interview or I walk.

thats the the first question on the test,
is this person subserviant/desperate/manipulatable enough to do what we tell them?

As you can imagine, I dont have one of those jobs. :thumb

Wish it was that easy to say no but I had to do the test to even get to the stage where they might think about interviewing me. Its true though 3 hours and I can't say that I can see the point of some of the questions asked in the test. What do they prove anyway.

can we get an example test to look at anywhere?

maybe its a left side right side type of analasis, amongst other things.

no right or wrong just an idea of who they are dealing with.
unless of course you already know what answers will serve you purpose.
then they are in strife.

They do have their purpose if administered and interpreted right - but who's to say thats going to happen!?

Id be asking the purpose and scope of the test, and the credentials of those conducting and interpreting the info! if they wont provide you with that i wouldnt bother with it!!
"cus fk em thats why!"

I don't know if you can get copies of these test It came in 3 sections the first part seemed to be on personality and there was a couple of problem solving questions in there like putting the next number in the sequence the 2nd part of the test was on coping skills and the 3rd part Im sure was to see if your a nut case it asked really strange questions, like do I here voices in my head that other people can't hear, does your childhood come back to haunt you who's doesn't? those long care trips in the boiling heat next to your brother who won't stop teasing the hell out of you. Are you satisfied with your sex life now that threw me how do you answer that and what does that have to do with your work?

Just my 2 cents worth, I don't really agree with the tests either, but I have done a couple (Psych major in a past life...) I can see some vague ideological use for them but they can totally be manipulated and mood is a big indicator. I've even seen testers deliberately affect the mood of the person taking the test to manipulate results.
In a high stress paramedic environment, I can see why they would want less psychotic people but the test really only sorts out the major whackos who would even admit to torturing small animals 🙂

Anyway, it looks like there was a small amount of IQ testing in there too, just for good measure 😉
Good luck with the rest of the process, I hope it isn't all as big a waste of time as that test!

They have to do some sort of validated screening that can and does pick out the wrong people for the job. Usually a mini iq test, logic, screening questions to assess for some mental/mood disorders, personality disorders etc. Some tests are well validated and have good results IF administered properly.

This if is the clincher. Who validates the tester?

A good way to fudge them is to do as many other sorts of iq etc tests before hand. Get your brain 'thinking like that'

As metioned before they also want to see how easy it is to indoctrinate you to their process. Dianetics anyone?

These mickey mouse tests still outscore an interviewer for reliability and repeatability. If you have ever done days of interviews, its really hard to keep on the ball for the whole time.
