Hi Everyone,
Need some advice on what to buy to transform into a Baja,
what I am considering is a 68 to 70 manual bug these having disk brake/balljoint front ends I would like to have IRS rear.
Done a bit of home work and found that the semi autos come out with irs and the manuals where swing axles what would be the best way to go.
Thanx Redgum

Best would be going semi auto and converting to manual.
Apparently they have a clutch tube so this is not a big task.

Otherwise a 66 and earlier link pin chassis converted to IRS.
You dont get the disc brakes then but IMO I would rather go K+L
depends how serious you want to go with front travel as BJ front ends have BJ binding problems when raised.
They also have no bump stops.

I am using the baja mainly for road with a little bit of weekend fun.
What model vw do I look at to get a manual gear box and other stuff from.

A superbug for the box as it is the only other IRS beetle aside from the semi auto.
I think the semi auto pan would suit your needs perferctly.. good luck finding one.

Oh by the way, you can buy a superbug pan and graft a BJ frame head kit onto it too if you cannot find a semi auto.
cheers

the book is really good, worth it. I personally like the earlier bugs to baja, I like the linkpin front end and the styling better. It's all up to personal preference. They all rock.
