ROME - A second hand car once said to be registered in the name of Joseph Kardinal Ratzinger - the new Pope Benedict - is up for sale on eBay and the sky seems to be the limit when it comes to bidding.

The vehicle, a metallic grey 1999 Volkswagen Golf, went up for auction on the German site (www.ebay.de) at a minimum price of 9900 euros ($18,000) on Wednesday and, just over 24 hours and more than 300 bids later, the price had hit one million euros ($1.8 million).

German website n-tv.de identified the seller as Benjamin Halbe, 21, from the town of Olpe in Germany's Sauerland region, who said he bought the car from a local dealer in January.

"It drives like heaven," the site quoted Halbe as saying.

The website of the German newspaper Bild quoted an eBay spokeswoman in Germany as saying the online auctioneer had checked with the vehicle licensing office which had confirmed the name of the original owner was genuine.

Ratzinger, who is from Bavaria in southern Germany, has been at the Vatican for more than two decades and is not known to drive. The Vatican was not available for comment on the auction, which closes on May 5 at 7.30pm (5.30am NZT).

The auction site describes the vehicle as a two litre petrol-powered manual, with 75,000km on the clock since it was first registered in March 1999.

"Does black smoke or white smoke come out of the exhaust pipe?" one posting on the site asked - a reference to the signal used at the Vatican to show whether a new pope has been elected by the secret conclave of cardinals.

"Very funny," was the reply.

Do you find it odd that the middle name of the person said to have owned it is 'Kardinal' - which was his title previous to being elected to pope. A quick search online has found that Benedict XVI (is that the right number?) was named Joseph Alois Ratzinger. Most of the links to Joseph Kardinal Ratzinger are related to the car sale.

*shrugs* its the sceptic in me 🙂

Pope's old Volkswagen Golf goes on tour

Friday, 20 May , 2005, 03:38

Berlin: The former Volkswagen Golf of Pope Benedict XVI, which was recently bought at an auction for almost 190,000 euros (240,000 dollars), set out on a European tour from western Germany, Richard Rowe, who runs the online casino company which now owns the car, said.

People who want to see the "divine car" in their town have to vote online, and the places which get the most votes will be the chosen ones for a visit.
The American casino company bought the Golf on an auction website in early May from a 21-year-old German, Benjamin Halbe.
The young man made a quick killing, having bought the car in January for 9,500 euros, when the man who is now head of the Roman Catholic Church was still Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger.
Halbe said he planned to donate 10,000 euros to sick children.
"If people are auctioning off stones which were in front of the pope's house, I would like to auction off a car in which he sat once," he said.
The Golf previously belonged to Ratzinger's former secretary.
It is considered unlikely that he ever drove the car, because he does not have a driving licence, according to Church sources.
