.
The car jack!!
very dangerous but it works.
How, jack up the back and spin the wheels?
.
yep. Its actually referenced in the Muir book "How to Keep your VW Alive"
Jack up one side, put it in gear, probably 3rd, and turn the rear wheel. Never tried it, way too dangerous for me. But i spose in an emergency it would do the trick.
wouldnt it just take off when the engine started up??
Or cause the wheel has no traction all power is put to it?
Sounds like death to me 😠
.
Yep thats the theory chewy. Wheel in the air will spin all the power away.
My advise would be "dont try this at home kids"
damn, definitely wont be trying that one! good to know tho just incase.
Reimagined/Recycled/Upcycled Cool
Been done many times, not just with VWs.
Need to jack up the drivers side (after chocking the p/s wheels) so you can reach in quickly once it is going to put it out of gear.
Jack Absolom also demonstrates this method in his Survival in the Outback video, using an old Sigma wagon and using a 9v Dolpfin torch battery hooked up to the coil.
Works!!
Excentric (wife says) VW nut, having owned 250+ VWs in 40 years.
How do you turn the wheel fast enough to fire the engine? Just turn it by hand?
get the pet mice out....
everything dies baby, thats a fact..
maybe everything that dies one day comes back..
put your make up on and your hair up pretty..
and meet me tonight in Atlantic city..
what ever happened to a goodold fashioned push start? I used to be able to start my beetle within two meters...
...and Robert's ya father's brother...
the Worst part is......
You Cannot have the hand brake on.....
[naturally]
So, its very dangerous if You are by Yourself....
Much Safer with someone in the car to put it in neutral.... and then put the handbrake on ......
before the car falls off the jack and drives away by itself......

a 1600 or larger engine with good compression would be hard to start this way... IMHO....
Anyone game enough to try it and let Us all know which gear to have it in.....
If You had somone in the car then they could let the clutch out when You had the wheel spinning fairly fast.....
[rear brake shoes might have to be adjusted if they were dragging...]

sounds like a job for Dirty Sanches, the thing is they'd put their arse on the wheel when it starts to spin:P
I got an opportunity to try this today.
I could hardly turn the engine over in third and in fourth it just kicked back. This is with a dp 1600. If you could retard the timing somehow to just slightly after tdc it would work.
i got a crank nut on my buggy. borrowed a handle and it starts very easy warm & ok when cold after a few priming turns over. the guy i borrowed the handkle off has it for his buggy too. his stasrts fine as well.

Sure is something I wouldn't try
