is there a way to research this...i wonder if you could do a search on car regos by model, are car regos searchable by the general public?

Dont know about now but years ago you could pay motor reg and they would tell you what models there were around each area. They could not restrict it to years so you would get all of them, splits, bays, t25's etc.
The problem with this is here in S.A. all kombis with more than the front seat is classed as a station wagon, so their records would not just point out 23's but all micros, kombis with seats, 13's etc.

Also it would have to be rego'ed to show up, they dont let people see the details of expired rego's.

Cheers

Just thought as well.
I believe all deluxes were actually imported and not made here, VW germany might still have a record of the numbers officailly imported, but quite a few might have been private imports.

wonder if you could just select the historic car regos...or whatever it is called, the one if your car is over 30yrs of age and has restricted usage to shows/etc...i suspect most 23s would be in this category as likely not daily drivers

arent we all...i just makes me curious to know how many might be left and the likely condition of most of them...are thare any members on this site that have one...if so i havent seen one...is there a "closed shop" on finding them? I have never seen one in any condition for sale in australia to get an idea of what they are worth here. The ones i see in usa are going for approx 50kaus$, but nothing to compare with over here, if it is that hard to find one then might have to import from USA. I am not in the market now...but it is a 3-5year plan, depending on what state she is in, I could go earlier if it is a shell that i could find and start the long slow perfect resto

A 1961 23 was sold here in adelaide about 6 months ago , it was an older resto, done about 10 years ago and really needed doing again, it went for between $35 and $45k.

A 1960 23 walkthrough(very rare) was sold from Adelaide about 3 years ago for about $12k, it needed a full resto, ALL panels needed doing.

They are around but many dont get advertised as people tell the owners "if you ever want to sell let me know" and when they do come up for sale they sell instantly, that is why you never see then advertised.
The only ones you will see advertised are the crap ones that they want too much for.

dave just to get some facts in order...yes the vw factory did produce dlx buses in australia..be it the 21 window model you were able to order a local produced which had several distinguishing features or a fully import with a higher price tag....will soon be able to reveal how many dlx were produced at clayton in 66/7 but not the total sold as some were still fully imported. a rough count of less than 30 23's /21's exist on our shores..a few of the boyz in the know are compiling some rough estimates for both 23's and 21's love to hear if there are some new ones to add. cheers DSK steve

Chears winerot..(what the hell does that mean anyhow?)..i love the bus as much as you guys looking @ it in the mag..always have..also love my early bay dc`s and syncro dc.

bays are the next big thing..they rock!

i ask the same question of my mates weekly..and i`ve already got one

I believe there are 21-23`s sitting out there in garages.,(or worse..back yards).i have followed up lots of leads to find they have been crushed by SIMS Metal..but many more remain..if i new where.!!

their out there..just a matter of getting them b4 the poms do..and they are keener hunters than we are..I`ve been thinking of a remote chopper with a video mounted..just fly it up all the back lanes and then review the tape...ones waiting for ya mate.k

I think samba is on the money(what does that mean).
Bays will be the next splitty , I think this as the splitty's are getting dearer to buy and we also have the competition from the poms(yes I am one).
I was having an e-mail fight with a guy who comes over here a couple of times a year and his actual words were

" I laugh at the state of the splitties you have left as I have taken all the good ones".

This guy is obviously only in it for the money.
And as he has money to spend we have to compete.
Bays are a hell of a lot cheaper but that will change soon, grab one now, as this same guy is now buying early bays as he cant find good splits.

The scene overseas is only increasing ( people thought the bus scene would die out a couple of years ago)and Australia is about 5 years behind, so hopefully we will see some more buses on the road and not parked behind someones house deteriorating.

Also with traders bringing in bus bits it is now cheaper to get parts.
I remember a few years ago asking some traders for prices of parts and they all said, " if you want that you will have to import it yourself", they couldnt be bothered as the scene was too small, thank god its now changed.

Anyway this is getting off the topic,

Get out there looking, you never know what you might find, like the guy in NZ who found the barny 23.
And if you find something you dont want only let people who you know will restore or keep it safe, not the people who only sell to make mega profits and dont care where they go.
Rant over.

Cheers
Dave

It will only be a few years before bays are as sought after as the splits now...its already happened in UK (I`ve lived there in the UK scene)..check the classifieds on samba..try $18 k US as an accepted price for the 70`s DC`s and singles..some not even pretty..didnt look @ busses..but the real reason i say it is cause I love the early bays look as much as splits..and they drive better..slam em down on 15`s or 16`s or do a 68-69 as stock (rims)..dont much like the 72 on rims..I`ve been driving these busses since 85` and love them even more now..but they`ll all disappear VERY soon..The poms just came and cleaned out a mates yard of about 30-40 bays (perth)..drove the containers straight in..filled em up and bye bye..look for 2 good examples now and put one aside for you or your kids..the other for your super..ciao kieran

ps.if these photos come through the 71 is $18kUS ??!!
